*Ecological Sustainability in the Inland Empire Summit*
May 18, 2026 10-3pm
Location TBD
UC Riverside Center for Conservation Biology
The summit will be a structured yet informal meeting to identify current
challenges and opportunities for ecological sustainable pathways in the
Inland Empire region both as an important region and a more general model.
The morning will feature presentations and discussion by regional leaders
in conservation efforts. The afternoon will feature a series of roundtable
discussions oriented to identifying ecological sustainability issues in the
I.E. An initial white paper report following the summit will synthesize
perspectives on next generation multi-species habitat conservation plans
and develop a roadmap for addressing needs in our region. This meeting is a
precursor to a broader symposium planned for the Fall.
*Session 1: Current Conservation Practices in the I.E.*
Goal – Generate baseline knowledge of current practices and needs for
managing conservation in the Inland Empire region, both as an important
region in a biodiversity hotspot and a model for conservation globally.
10:00 – 10:15 Introduction and visioning, Darrel Jenerette,
10:15 – 10:35 Foundations of MSHCPs in the Inland Empire, Michael Allen
10:35 – 10:55 MSHCP in Western Riverside, Tesa Madsen-Hepp
10:55 – 11:15 MSHCP in Coachella, Lynn Sweet
11:15 – 11:35 Inland Empire MSHCP in National Context, Kai Palenscar
11:35 – 12 :00 Panel Discussion
12-1pm Lunch, provided
*Session 2: Needs and opportunities to enhance ecological sustainability in
the I.E.*
Goal – Brainstorm directions for achieving ecological sustainability in the
inland empire and plan for Fall symposium. Topics are tentative and subject
to revision.
1:00 – 1:30 What are the needs / challenges unique to the I.E. for pathway
toward ecological sustainability?
1:30 – 2:00 What are the knowledge, information, data gaps?
2:00 – 2:30 What are the opportunities and how to capitalize?
2:30 – 3pm – Wrap up and develop future plan
