*"Drought and heat: species’ environmental limits through the lens of plant
physiology"*

*TALK DESCRIPTION*

As an ecophysiologist I have been intrigued by the diversity of plant
adaptations to grow and survive along environmental gradients.
Specifically, I want to understand why some species are widely distributed
and how studying their climatic limits can inform us about climate change
adaptation. One approach to understand environmental constraints on plant
function is by studying how drought and heat stress limit plants’ ability
to uptake carbon. In this talk, I will explore how plant physiology can
help us to understand the distribution limits in ponderosa pine and
trembling aspen along a water availability gradient, and the impacts of a
never-seen-before heatwave in Fremont cottonwood. I will also highlight
ongoing work to understand the interactive effects of heat and drought on
the growth of Douglas fir.

*BIO*

German Vargas-Gutiérrez is an Assistant Professor in the departments of
Botany & Plant Pathology and Forest Ecosystems & Society at Oregon State
University (OSU). He received his doctorate in Plant Biological Sciences
from the University of Minnesota in 2021 and was a NOAA Climate and Global
Change postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah before joining OSU in
2024. German’s research investigates how trees respond to abiotic
stressors, applying this knowledge to study physiological adaptations and
the effects of climate change on forest productivity in both tropical and
temperate ecosystems.
