SMI'S NEW HOME

Throughout Fall 2009, the SMI Resource Center prepared for its move and
expansion into Pierce 1315.  Shortly before Finals Week in December, the new
transformation was realized.  Features of the new Center include: a meeting
lounge, conference/work group study area, resource library, and multiple
technology work stations.  The expansion will enable more student-to-student
interactions and enable them to study, plan lessons, and network with each
other.  

The Center's expansion also involved adding teaching-related career
resources to improve pre-credential candidates' ability to prepare engaging
science and mathematics lesson plans.  In partnership with the UCR Library,
an online listing of STEM education journals can be found at

addition, several new education STEM (science, technology, engineering,
mathematics) journal subscriptions  will be added to the UCR library.  All
these accomplishments were funded in part by a the US Department of
Education's College Cost Reduction Access Act (CCRAA) grant funded to our
campus.

NSF NOYCE SCHOLARSHIPS

SMI students advancing to junior, senior, or credential teaching status in
the 2010-11 academic year should consider Robert

Teaching funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Multiple
scholarships, up to $10,000 per award, will be awarded exclusively to future
science and mathematics teachers majoring in a STEM discipline.  To learn

SCHOLARLY REVIEWS & 5E DEMONSTRATIONS 

Each winter quarter, SMI offers a 1-unit elective seminar,
<http://smi.ucr.edu/files/nasc192.pdf> NASC 192, that affords CNAS and BCOE
students opportunities to meet and network with educational professionals
from local school districts.  In addition to exposing NASC 192 students to a
series of informative panel discussions, the class provides students with
hands-on connections to scholarly journals focused on science and
mathematics education.  Students are also mentored directly by Professor
Bradley Hyman, SMI faculty director and a National Academies of Education
Fellow, to prepare their own unique 5E lesson.

In partnership with the UCR Library, UCR Librarian Christina Cicchetti, 

designed a customized library page for NASC 192 students

Christina also conducted an educational tutorial especially for NASC 192
students to help them effectively navigate through the various library
search engines.  These two new resources have enhanced the NASC 192 seminar
experience.

TTSM (Tomorrow's Teachers in Science and Math) is an on-campus club
self-governed  by current UCR students considering and/or pursuing science
and mathematics education careers.  The club's primary purposes are  to
create a organization where future STEM educators are able to form a
community and develop professional leadership and skills.  General meetings
are scheduled on a bi-weekly basis.  Officer meetings are scheduled on a
weekly basis.  ALL UCR students are welcome to attend the General and/or
Officer Meetings.

 <http://smi.ucr.edu/training.html> SMI Summer Institute 2010- Scientific
Teaching:  Barring budgetary constraints, the  SMI Summer Institute 2010 is
tentatively scheduled for early August.  This is an intensive training for
future and credentialed science and mathematics teachers based on the
teaching philosophy modeled in Scientific Teaching (Handelsman, 2007).
These highly interactive sessions are lead by Professor Bradley Hyman.

Apprentice Programs: Recruitment to fill 2010-2011 SMI & ALPHA Center
Apprentice positions will begin in late-Winter/early-Spring.  This excellent
resume building opportunity was designed to recruit SMI participants who
have completed, or will have completed, EDUC 3 and EDUC 4 by Spring 2010,
maintained good academic standing, and have passed the CBEST Exam.  Current
Apprentices are paid at $25 per hour.

Energizing and Inspiring Passion and Performance Dr. Pamela Clute will
conduct a high-energy presentation focusing on the importance of mathematics
and science education to our country's economic vitality, our personal

real life examples that inspire and set the stage for meaningful and
continued learning.
