Invites you to attend a Colloquium by:
Mr. Ryan Wells
Ph.D. Candidate in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies
University of Iowa
Speaking on:
Expectations for postsecondary education:
Exploring issues of immigrant status, gender,
race/ethnicity, and high school composition
Past literature has shown that high expectations
are a necessary, though insufficient, step toward
higher education enrollment and degree
attainment. However, the models used in past
research do not adequately represent the
expectation-formation process for all students.
For example, children of immigrants have higher
average expectations for college than
nonimmigrants, but have less overall success in
higher education. Since a major portion of
students' socialization experiences in the U.S.
take place in the schools they attend, I present
research which examines the ways that school
composition affects immigrant students'
educational expectations. Educational
expectations and expectation-formation also
differ by gender and race/ethnicity. I present
additional research that examines the gender-gap
in educational expectations as well as the
relationship of race/ethnicity with this gap.
This research lays the groundwork for future
studies of enrollment, unrealized expectations,
persistence, and attainment for sub-populations
of students at both community colleges and four-year institutions.
