Dear UC colleagues,
We hope this message finds you well! We have an important update to bring
to your attention. Please note that our PhD Open House will take place from
2:45pm-4:00pm (previous email communications had it listed from 2:00pm -
3:30pm) on October 4 at UC Irvine.
Here is the current list of programs and departments that have signed up.
You will be able to start setting up your table at 1:30pm. If your
department/program isn't on the list yet, we hope you'll consider
travelling to Irvine to represent it.

   - UC Irvine ChAMP Program
   - UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences
   - UC Irvine Graduate Division
   - UC Irvine Mathematics
   - UC Irvine Physics & Astronomy
   - UC Merced Physics
   - UC Riverside Computer Science & Engineering
   - UC Riverside Graduate Division
   - UC Riverside Physics & Astronomy
   - UC Santa Barbara Statistics and Applied Probability
   - UC Santa Barbara Technology Management
   - UC Santa Cruz Electrical and Computer Engineering
   - UC San Diego Halicioglu Data Science Institute
   - UC San Diego Mathematics

As a reminder, over 100 diverse Cal-Bridge undergraduate scholars - juniors
and seniors planning to apply to PhD programs - will be in attendance.
These scholars, if they enroll in any UC PhD program, would join the
Cal-Bridge Doctoral Program, which provides substantial support to
Cal-Bridge UC doctoral scholars, which you can read about in this one-pager
<https://campusgroups.calbridge.org/click?email_links_id=1934&member_id=11662939>.
This support will include a $40,000 Cal-Bridge Fellowship
<https://campusgroups.calbridge.org/click?email_links_id=1935&member_id=11662939>
that the department can use to support their doctoral studies. To see our
scholars at last year’s open house, take a look at this 4-minute video
<https://campusgroups.calbridge.org/click?email_links_id=1936&member_id=11662939>from
last year’s conference at UC Irvine.
There will be a research symposium that morning where these undergraduates
will be presenting their summer research work. You are invited to attend
this symposium, starting around 9:30am and lasting until lunchtime, to
allow you to become familiar with the work and interests of these potential
PhD applicants.
We think this is a great recruiting opportunity for your department and/or
program. The Scholars in attendance will be required to apply to UC
programs, and many are inclined to attend a UC program for their doctoral
studies. We would hope that the cost to the department would be offset by
the benefit of having access to a large, diverse population of highly
qualified undergraduates (70% of Cal-Bridge scholars get into a PhD program
with an average of over two offers per scholar accepted).
If you would like to participate, please complete this registration form
<https://campusgroups.calbridge.org/click?email_links_id=1937&member_id=11662939>
by August 25th. We require at least one faculty member to be present and we
strongly encourage you to send graduate students as well. If you are no
longer in the role that our records show, we would be grateful if you would
pass this invitation along to the relevant member of your department and/or
program. Also, it would be helpful to provide this information to us so
that we can update our records.
Details about the logistics and costs are provided below.
Logistical Details:

   - UC Irvine, Student Center, 311 W Peltason Dr. Irvine, CA 92697
(outdoors under the canopies on the upper level)
   - Date: Saturday, October 4th, 2025
   - Time: 2:45pm - 4:00pm

Each department will be provided the following:

   - 6 foot table with solid colored table cloth
   - 4’x’6 free standing poster board

Regarding costs:
If you are not attending the conference, you are expected to pay for your
own travel, lodging and accommodations. We can arrange a special rate at
the conference hotel for a limited number of attendees, on a first come
basis. There is a space on the registration form to indicate if you need a
hotel room. We are happy to provide lunch on October 4th (and breakfast if
you attend the research symposium), and you can indicate interest on the
registration form.
Should you have any logistical questions, please do not hesitate to reach
out to Michelle DiPasquale, Events Manager at events at calbridge.org.
We hope your department and/or program will participate!
Best,
Bruce A. Schumm
