Dear International Graduate Students,

Please see the call for Phi Beta Kappa International Graduate Scholarships opportunities attached and below.

Dear Advisors and Program Coordinators,

The Graduate Division requests your assistance in notifying international graduate students from your program about the Phi Beta Kappa International Scholarship.

Guidelines for eligibility are as follows:

a. The award is intended for foreign students who will be completing graduate work--in their final year (so far as anyone can predict). Students are only eligible for one award. They should also be working toward the usual "terminal" degree in the field (normally the Ph.D., sometimes, as in the Performing Arts, something like an MFA).

b. Awardees are expected to be returning to their home countries, preferably just after completing the degree. However, postdoctoral study has always been an area where some latitude has been permitted, especially where it is expected as “part of the degree” and/or is unobtainable in the home country. It is also recognized that political or economic conditions may prevent the student from returning home. However, if one of your selections is not expected to be returning directly home, please explain when you submit the candidate’s application.

                   c. Awardees must have both academic excellence and significant need.

                   d. Awardees do have to be fully enrolled to receive their scholarships, and they will need to submit proof of enrollment to get their checks. Note: being on filing fee status (i.e. paying only a significantly reduced “placeholder fee”) is not considered "full enrollment." Also, while in the distant past there have been awardees who were permitted to take a quarter or semester off within the scholarship year by special exception, the expectation is that with the reduced number of awards to be made, this will no longer be the case.

                   e. Awardees are not limited to persons who come from underdeveloped or developing countries.

                   f. Awards are to be made without discrimination on the basis of sex, race, age, or creed.
Students should submit their application materials via email to Cindy Cardenas in the Graduate Division: cynthia.cardenas at ucr.edu<mailto:cynthia.cardenas at ucr.edu> no later than Friday April 23rd.

Application forms are attached here.

Thank you,
Cindy
