Hello Graduate students and Postdoctoral scientists of BPSC!



Next week, the BPS DEI committee will host Professor José R.Dinneny
<https://dinnenylab.me/> as our departmental speaker. His work focuses on
cloning and characterization of JAGGED and NUBBIN in flower and fruit
development, and he has been a strong advocate for diversity in the sciences

His visit will be graduate student & post-doctoral researcher centric which
will include:



Postdoc Lunch (can accommodate up to 3-4 people, Barn)

*Discussion topic: “Transition to research independence”*



Graduate Student Coffee (open accommodation, Genomics 4101)

*Discussion topic: "Balancing mentoring and service with high-impact
science"*



Individual/small group meetings throughout the day (can accommodate up to
two people per slot, Genomics)

Here is a little more on the current criteria for selecting speakers (as of
Apr 2023):

·  A plant scientist who identifies from an underrepresented group and/or
A scientist who goes beyond discipline norms. For example, someone who
explores a social-equity issue related to agriculture, someone who can
speak to decolonizing sciences from a social science perspective or by
elevating indigenous science, or someone who focuses on improving science
pedagogy
