Dear BMSC Graduate Program Faculty,

Our BMSC students are starting their classes today. They have been in some of your labs doing rotations since 2nd week of July. Hope all is going well. The BMSC graduate program leadership recently met with the Graduate Advisory Council (GAC) and received full support to update the PhD lab rotation requirement and lab placement. Exceptional cases can be discussed individually with PI and Grad Advisor.

The following changes will be implemented immediately and followed by all BMSC Program faculty:

  1. All incoming PhD students will be required to complete a minimum of three 10-week lab rotations before being able to start in a home/dissertation lab. Please use the updated rotation form.
     * No technical rotation will be allowed during this period.
  2. Lab rotations are part of the BMSC 261 required curriculum and Rotation Faculty will provide feedback and a Satisfactory/No Credit grade to the BMSC Graduate Advisor.
     * Students will write a summary of the completed rotation and evaluation of the rotation lab and submit the attached form (BMSC Rotation Writeup and evaluation Form) to the Graduate Advisor.
  3. To provide each student equal opportunity to be evaluated and considered for placement in home/dissertation labs, we request that all program faculty wait until after the 3rd rotation is over.
     * Feb 1 is the earliest a faculty can offer placement in their lab.
  4. Once students are accepted into your lab, a commitment letter from Hermila Torres, Student Services Advisor will need to be signed by both parties.
     * a guidance committee composed of the major professor who chairs the committee, and two additional graduate program faculty is established by the end of their first year.

Tentative Rotation dates:

1st rotation end- 1st week of September

2nd rotation end- 2nd week of November

3rd rotation end-4th week of January

Do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Zheng, Hermila or me at any time if you have questions.

Best regards,
