Hello all,

This Friday from 12-1 we will be holding a short meeting in the Darwin room
to talk to a representative from our union. This is a chance to communicate
any issues we might have before the union meets to discuss what they will be
trying to change. I urge anyone who has issues with how current or future
budget cuts might affect the graduate students to come and voice those
issues. Below, I've included the e-mail from John Gust, with whom we will
be meeting.

Matthew

The meeting is your opportunity to learn more about the Union; ask questions
and participate in the Union’s grassroots mobilization plan

· Learn about the new contract and wage increases

o new rights and compensation including how to take advantage of expanded
childcare benefits;

o ensuring everyone’s right to a full tuition waiver, including the new
partial waiver of non-resident tuition;

o making sure everyone receives their wage increase and Fall 2010
“lump-sum” increase

· Create plan to fight back against UC’s budget cuts

o Sacramento strategy to defend UC against budget cuts; work toward
balancing the state’s budget by taxing those with greater ability to pay –
not students and workers;

o On-campus strategy to fight fee hikes and cuts that hurt access,
affordability and quality research and instruction as well as fight against
highly-paid administrators’ attempts to reap more than IRS-imposed pension
limits

· Give input on next steps for the union

o discuss ideas for the Union’s agenda over the next 1 to 5 years,
including political action, accountability at UC, community action and
involvement, and more

· Any other issues or ideas you want to bring to the meeting.

Best,

John Gust
