On October 28, the UCR School of Medicine's very own Dr. Byron Ford will be the speaker at Consilience: The Albert Stroberg Lecture Series at the Alumni and Visitors Center. An in-person reception begins at 6 p.m. and the presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.

The lecture series provides a meaningful and engaging forum for the delivery of educational addresses on basic science topics that will be of interest and use to the practicing clinician.

"Neuregulin-1 for Stroke Treatment:  A Journey from the Bench to Clinical Translation"

Ford studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of stroke and acute brain injuries, including the neuroprotective roles of neuregulin-1 (NRG-1) and other compounds in stroke and other acute neuroinflammatory disorders.

Neurregulin-1 (NRG-1) is currently in human trials, demonstrating significant efficacy in a phase II study of heart failure patients.

His work has has yielded nine full U.S. patents, two Canadian patents and one each from China and Australia. The results of these studies have therapeutic implications for other acute neuroinflammatory disorders include traumatic brain injury, nerve agent toxicity, cerebral malaria and sepsis.
