Re: Juneteenth Observance at the University of California
Dear Colleagues,
As you know, it was announced today that President Drake has added Juneteenth to UC's calendar of holidays and the University is to observe it this year on Monday, June 28th. I will be observing this year's Juneteenth by beginning an exploration of book lists, podcasts, and historical documents from and by experts in related scholarly disciplines to educate myself on the history of the first Juneteenth 158 years ago. I hope you'll join me.
I also share the link to today's Juneteenth event hosted by UCR's Black Faculty and Staff Association in association with African Student Programs and the UCR Black Alumni Chapter: https://leslies99.wixsite.com/ucrjuneteenth2021.
Finally, is also not lost on me that Juneteenth became a national holiday while the Emmet Till Antilynching Bill<https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/55/text> has not been passed and people are still fighting to earn a living wage.
Let there be light,
Jason
