All,

Because demand for bioinformatics capabilities throughout the food, agricultural, and natural resource sectors greatly outweigh current supply, there is a critical need for a diverse, talented workforce specializing in Bioinformatics, Genetics, and Genomic Sciences (BiGG). The goal of the Explore BiGG Data REEU is to holistically prepare talented, diverse women for graduate programs and careers in these fields.

This program provides opportunities to develop critical thinking, problem solving, and digital competency skills using a powerful combination of biological and computational training. Furthermore, 21st Century professional development training provides Explore BiGG Data Fellows with the communication/leadership skills needed for future employment and/or higher education. Research is done in 5-person teams comprised of one faculty member and student from computational backgrounds (bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, etc.), one faculty member and student from biological backgrounds, and a graduate student mentor.

This year our projects are:

  * Population genetics of Aedes mosquitos, known vectors of La Crosse virus<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Freeu.tennessee.edu%2Fproject1-2023%2F&data=05%7C01%7Crfryxell%40utk.edu%7C29dfec9dc984473af2a008daeffdc213%7C515813d9717d45dd9eca9aa19c09d6f9%7C0%7C0%7C638086170766352528%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=8TxJuFIh99CiAROG22pefAMLdv%2Bpaq8ArvWb8Xi8XR0%3D&reserved=0>

If you know women or woman-aligned students who are interested in this type of program, please forward this message to them. Also, please forward this to your biology colleagues. The application portal is located at our website: https://reeu.tennessee.edu/<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Freeu.tennessee.edu%2F&data=05%7C01%7Crfryxell%40utk.edu%7C29dfec9dc984473af2a008daeffdc213%7C515813d9717d45dd9eca9aa19c09d6f9%7C0%7C0%7C638086170766352528%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=W1kxwKzktW5CWeqA2hBz7sLRqcF5htqN0wmfRPTo56o%3D&reserved=0> . Applications are accepted through Feb. 15, but we review on a rolling basis so the earlier they submit, the better. To provide an overview, I have also attached an infographic that a member of our 2022 cohort prepared.
