Subject: [N-GRADPROFCOMM] Participants Needed for Study on Mentoring Experiences of Latinx Doctoral Students in STEM Programs

Friends & Colleagues,

I hope you are all doing well, staying safe, and healthy as we get towards the busy season in the fall semester. My name is Rafael Almanzar, and I work for the Office for Student Success at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Additionally, I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Higher Education Administration program at TAMU. My dissertation research focuses on the mentoring experiences of Latinx doctoral students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs with their White faculty STEM mentors at predominantly White institutions. This is critical research that will draw implications for STEM programs, White faculty, administrators, and higher education institutions to better support Latinx STEM doctoral students.

I am conducting this dissertation study to finish my doctoral studies and graduate. As a member of this advising community, I am seeking your support in recruiting participants. I am looking for participants who meet the following criteria:

  *   Self-identify racially as Latinx.
  * Be a current doctoral student who is at least in year 3 of their STEM doctoral program.
  * Have STEM faculty mentors who identify racially as White, not be of Latinx origin.
  * Be at a public research one intensive predominantly White institution.
  * Complete a short electronic essay in English (minimum 500 words).
  *

Participants will engage in two 45-60 minutes interviews via Zoom, and will complete a short written narrative, with a minimum of 500 words in English. Interviews will be recorded, and participants will be required to leave their video camera on when the recording happens. I will not share these recordings with anyone outside of the immediate study team (myself and my faculty advisor) or TAMU Compliance. I would appreciate your support if you can share this information with students you are working with who may meet the selection criteria.

I can be contacted at r.almanzar1 at tamu.edu<mailto:r.almanzar1 at tamu.edu> if participants have any questions about my study or are interested.

IRB number: IRB2021-0960
Approval date: 11/4/2021

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Cheers!
Rafael Almanzar

The Student Success Help Desk is a resource for students who encounter roadblocks or barriers to help them stay on track for graduation, preferably within four years. Some issues may be as simple as getting a required course, while others may relate to being admitted to upper-level requirements or simply knowing you are in the wrong major.
