[Allchlstudents23.24] Latinxs and the Environment

Today the program will be in downtown Riverside at the Culver Center. We will have Mariachi, food, a cultural vendor, and undergraduate and graduate students will share their research. Our featured speaker will be Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia.


Together with colleagues from the University of California, Berkeley, we are co-organizing the inaugural University of California Latinx and the Environment Research Conference.



This conference will bring undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and faculty to UCR from across the UC system to celebrate diversity with the theme: Connecting the Latinx Community in Environmental Research, Social Change, and Transformation.



This conference is part of a program called Latinx and the Environment, which aims to increase the presence of Latinx researchers in the environmental niche. Latinxs and the Environment<https://latinxsenv.ucr.edu/> is a new UC collaboration between UCR and UC Berkeley, funded by UCOP, as part of their Hispanic Serving Institution Doctoral Diversity Initiative.
Latinx are under-represented in the STEM fields, and our presence in the environmental fields of study is even lower. This results in a dire shortage of socially relevant research, particularly if we consider the disproportionately negative impacts of climate change in the Latinx community. The event is to take place Friday, October 20th, and Saturday, October 21st, 2023 at the University of California, Riverside campus.
