[Academicadvisors] Reimagining Orientation 2025 launching soon!

Dear UCR Campus Partners,

We are excited to share that Highlander Orientation 2025 has been
reimagined with the help and support of a dedicated workgroup of staff,
faculty, and campus leaders over the past year. Their thoughtful
discussions and feedback have helped shape a new model for orientation,
which begins this month in July. This new orientation model will be
gradually implemented over time and aims to ultimately enhance the student
experience that results in student success.

Prior to this year, students attended a two-day
orientation/advising/registration experience during the summer before the
Fall quarter.  Beginning this year, incoming students will see a separation
of the academic advising sessions, including the subsequent course
registration and student life orientation programming. The goal of this
separation is to reduce overlap and streamline processes for incoming
students. The advising component is also being reimagined with an
intentional focus on highlighting advising support that includes
registration, but more importantly, the opportunity for community building
from a servingness lens. Servingness in a university setting means moving
beyond mere enrollment and toward centering students’ lived experiences in
order to guide their success. First-year orientation is a pivotal venue for
embedding Servingness because it is often a student's first comprehensive
introduction to campus life.


Continuing in the tradition established by Student Life, the advising
support sessions will focus on integrating students into their academic
programs, but more importantly, identifying all of the ways advising is a
strategic tool throughout their academic journey. Advisors from each of the
colleges and/or schools, admissions, and enrollment are currently in the
process of implementing these changes. Transfer orientation and
registration will continue as in previous years, with the understanding
that next year we will similarly revise that process.

Please note that we will continue to review, assess, and implement
additional recommendations from the workgroup over the next few years.

Attached for your reference is the 2025 Highlander Orientation Schedule,
including virtual and transfer student sessions. Additionally, please find
the attached onboarding timeline for Highlander Orientation.
