A pregnant British woman sentenced to life in Laos for smuggling heroin has claimed the man who fathered her baby is a fellow prisoner.

Samantha Orobator, 20, told authorities she used British inmate John Watson's sperm to impregnate herself.

Building plans of the Phonthong prison show that in one block male and female cells are next to each other and asyringe was found among Orobator's possessions.

Pregnant: Samantha Orobator said fellow British inmate John Watson helped her to conceive in prison

Watson, 47, who is also serving a life sentence for drug smuggling, has two children by an ex-partner in the UK.

His mother, Pat said he was 'ecstatic' at becoming a father again, but is denying he is the father of the child to prison authorities.

Mrs Watson told the Observer: 'John emailed me a few months ago and said, how would you feel about being a grandma again?'

'At first I thought he was joking, but then he rang me and he sounded ecstatic. He told me he'd met a girl and she was having his baby.'

Orobator avoided a mandatory death sentence by becoming pregnant during the ten months she spent in jail after being caught with 1.5lb of heroin at an airport in the capital, Vientiane.

Execution of pregnant prisoners is banned in Laos.

If Watson is found to have helped Orobator, he could face further sanctions from authorities.

Both Orobator and Watson could now return to the UK under a prisoner transfer agreement, although this could take months to come into force.

Orobator, from south London, is understood to be nearly 28 weeks pregnant after which tine she is not supposed to fly.

Her lawyers have advised her not to appeal against her sentence so she can return to Britain as soon as possible.

A spokeswoman for Reprieve, which represents British prisoners facing trial abroad, previously said: 'We really want her home by June 6.

'That is the first day of her third trimester and she needs to travel before then.'
