Vanderbilt University is conducting an international search for a senior scholar (associate or full professor) to join our expanding interdisciplinary Asian Studies Program. This tenured position would be effective at the beginning of the Fall 2009 semester. We seek scholars in the humanities or humanities-inflected social sciences who are engaged in the critical inquiry of subjects including (but not limited to) culture/cultural theory, religion, literature, gender, media, arts, science/medicine, or law. We will consider candidates who specialize in South, Southeast, or East Asia; the ideal candidate would advance our program’s strengths in interdisciplinary and transnational scholarship. Asian Modernities
University of Toronto

The Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Asian Modernities, starting July 1, 2009. This position is a 49% appointment in the Asian Institute and a 51% appointment in either the Departments of East Asian Studies or Sociology.

The Asian Institute is a research and teaching centre located in the Munk Centre for International Studies, specializing in all geographical areas of Asia, including, among others, Southeast and Northeast Asia (see http://webapp.mcis.utoronto.ca/ai/). The position will involve teaching responsibilities in the undergraduate and Master's degree programs in Asia Pacific Studies. These programs emphasize a comparative, interdisciplinary, and transnational approach to contemporary issues in both Southeast and East Asia.

The ideal candidate would advance interdisciplinary, interregional and comparative scholarship on Asian modernities. Research and teaching interests should engage emerging and novel ways of understanding modernity, its various forms, and its consequences in Asia. Topics can be far-ranging and could include such issues as the city, gender and sexuality, emerging configurations of labour, land and capital, or media, science and technology. Scholars whose work focuses on Southeast and/or Northeast Asia are encouraged to apply.

Only applicants with Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2009, excellence in research and teaching, and demonstrated proficiency in at least one Asian language will be considered. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Cultural Anthropology

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology in the Department of Geography and Anthropology. We are seeking a cultural anthropologist with a geographic specialization in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or the Caribbean.  Research foci should complement rather than duplicate current departmental strengths. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies
Columbia University

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute invites applications for its 2009-2010 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Southeast Asian Studies. Candidates from all social science disciplines, including history, are welcome to apply. The fellowship will cover a 10 or 12-month period beginning July 1, 2009 or September 1, 2009. The Fellow will devote half time to his or her own research and will teach one graduate-level course on Southeast Asia per semester. The stipend for 2009-2010 is $44,000, plus benefits. Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. degree requirements (completed and filed the dissertation) between July 2005 and July 2009. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in a social science discipline, including history, working on modern Southeast Asia. Applications from individuals who hold or have held regular faculty positions will not be considered.
