UCLA Summer 2008 Travel Study Program
Thailand Sustainable Ecosystems

The Northern Andaman region of Thailand is a mosaic of
cultures and rich biodiversity. Buddhists, Muslims and Sea
Gypsies live side by side and work the sea for their
livelihoods. National Parks stretch from the coastal
mountains to the estuaries, mangrove forests and corals reefs.
This sustainable development program, offered by UCLA’s
interdisciplinary Institute of the Environment, Environmental
Science Department, engages students in academic fieldwork and
community based service learning. The program is based in
Thailand’s North Andaman region, Phang Nga Province, adjacent
to internationally destination resorts of Phuket. Student
investigations focus on environmental issues connected to
coastal ecosystems and communities.

Two courses are part of this program. In ENV 14, students
gain environmental science knowledge, learning about the
coastal environment, its physical, chemical, biological and
geological components of the oceans and the dynamic
interactions between living organisms. Through ENV 131,
students practice social research methods, conducting gender
and sustainability analyses with community members using
participatory approaches. The program is open to all
interested students.

Dates: July 1 - July 30, 2008

Fees: $3,700 for UC undergraduates and $4,000 for all others.
This does not include round-trip airfare to Bangkok.

Faculty: Dr. Michael Silverman and Prof. Rebecca Shipe, UCLA
