SOUTH/SOUTHEAST ASIAN HISTORY
The University of North Florida

The University of North Florida seeks to hire a tenure-track
assistant professor of South or Southeast Asian History to
begin the fall 2007-2008 academic year. Preference will be
given to candidates capable of teaching a general Introduction
to Asian History and courses in the modern era, as well as
upper-level and graduate courses in their areas of
specialization. Teaching experience and evidence of potential
for excellence in teaching and scholarship are required, as is
a Ph.D. (or ABD status with degree awarded no later than

Academic Position
PACIFIC RIM LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES
University of California, Santa Cruz

Literature Department at University of California, Santa Cruz,
tenure-track position in Comparative Literary and Cultural
Studies with focus on Pacific Rim area considered in
historical and/or contemporary perspectives. Seeking
scholar/teacher with broad training in critical and cultural
theory, competence in more than one language, and additional
grounding in non-U.S. context, e.g. postcolonial or diaspora
studies, transnational political economy, Third Cinema,
comparative visual or performance studies. Will be expected to
teach large undergraduate lecture courses, small advanced
seminars, and work in graduate program.
Five-course-equivalency, teaching four courses over three
quarters plus other academic and service responsibilities.
Must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a
wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are
especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the
diversity and excellence of the academic community through
their research, teaching, and/or service. Effective July 1,
2007. $48,100 – $53,800 commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Applicants must have Ph.D. or equivalent in
Literature or related field in hand; excellent research
abilities as testified to in letters of recommendation and as
manifest in published and/or unpublished writing; indications
of continued scholarly productivity; and an excellent record

ISLAM
University of California, Riverside

The University of California, Riverside, Department of
Religious Studies invites nominations and applications for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Islam. Cultural
area, historic period of specialization and methodology of the
study of Islam are open. Familiarity with classical scriptural
and oral traditions, jurisprudence, major sects, principal
schools of thought, forms of practice, and current debates is
desirable. Demonstrated competence in theoretical and
comparative issues in the field of Religious Studies is
expected, as well as the ability to relate the study of Islam
as a religion to other programs in the humanities and social
sciences. Candidates must possess a strong commitment to
teaching excellence at both the graduate and undergraduate
levels and a high research potential. PhD required. Salary is

ASIAN RELIGIONS
Wake Forest University

Wake Forest University, Department of Religion invites
applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank
of Assistant Professor in Asian Religions, beginning Fall
semester, 2007. Specialization in one or more of the following
areas/traditions is strongly desired: South, Southeast or East
Asian (China/Tibet) religions, especially Islam, modern
Hinduism, Buddhism, or modern East or South/east Asian
minority and folk religions. Teaching responsibilities (five
courses per year) include Introduction to Asian Religions
(teaching experience preferred) and upper-level courses in
Asian religions. Demonstrated competence in theoretical and
comparative issues in the academic study of religions is
expected. PhD required at time of appointment. The department
has ten regular faculty and offers BA, BA (honors), and MA
