Dear Colleague:
The Women's Resource Center cordially invites you and your associates to experience Sylvia Mendez. A Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Mendez is a civil rights activist of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent. You might even remember. When Mendez was eight, her parents tried to enroll her in an all-white school in their community, but were denied entry and admonished to head to the "school for Mexican children." Humiliated and outraged, her father and other parents sued the Westminster School District, making the Mendez v. Westminster case a pivotal point in the civil rights movement against segregation and setting in motion an archival chain of events that seven years later prompted Brown v. The Board of Education. On November 2 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. at UC Riverside's Highlander Union Building, room 302 North, you can view the documentary covering Mendez and the historical case and, then, engage the pacesetter and her filmmaker in a question and answer period.
To RSVP by October 17, please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HSML7D2.
