October 2011:  National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Take a Stand Against Relationship & Gender Violence

" I didn't hit her that hard.   It was just rough sex.   She throws things at me.
She throws things at me.     I'm afraid to leave.   It could never happen to me.
                                 Nobody deserves to be hurt.  She deserved it."

No More.

Participate in events during October to help raise awareness of intimate partner violence so that victims can find help, survivors can find support, and abusers can stop perpetrating hurt.


ALL MONTH      DONATE-A-CELL-PHONE CAMPAIGN - M-F, 8am-5pm, WRC (260 Costo)
Drop off your deactivated wireless cell phones at the WRC to be reprogrammed to access 911 and help enable abused women to place an emergency call.

OCT 3                   STALKING 101 - Noon - 1pm, HUB 260
Learn what stalking is, how to stop it, and where to find on- and off-campus information and resources about this harassing behavior.

OCT 4                   DRUNK SEX OR RAPE? - 3-5pm, HUB 260
Find out the difference between sex while intoxicated and rape, and the legal boundaries of each. Can you be charged if nobody said, "no?"  Find out.
OCT 4                   WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES - 3:30-5pm, Olmsted Plaza
Join a Riverside community symbolic mile-long walk around campus to protest rape, sexual assault, and gender violence while raising awareness of these issues.  Register between 3-3:45pm. Information tables available.

OCT 4                   MOVIE NIGHT w/Q&A: TAKE MY EYES - 6:30-8:30pm, HUB 302N
Attend this film screening and discussion of a Spanish drama critically acclaimed for its unclichéd treatment of domestic violence.

OCT 5                   MEN CREATING CHANGE: Boot Camp  - 6-9:30pm, HUB 355
Learn various ways to work with boys and men to challenge oppression, racism, classism, and heterosexism, which can all lead to violence against women.

OCT 6                   FILM SCREENING: HEARING RADMILLA - 6-8pm HUB 302S
View and discuss this film about the controversial reign and life of the first biracial Miss Navejo, touching on issues of identity and relationship violence. Part of Diversity Initiatives' Diversity Double Feature.

OCT 7                   MEN CREATING CHANGE - Chapter Start Discussion, 3:30-5:30pm, HUB 260
Explore the possibility of starting a Men Creating Change Chapter (MCCC) here on campus to actively engage men in preventing sexual assault and violence.

OCT 8                   BOWLING FOR INTERPRETING - 4-6pm, Arlington Lanes, 7100 Arlington Ave.
Bowl to benefit CODIE's<http://codie.org/> Deaf Domestic Violence Program and Interpreting Service. 25 lanes for each team of six, & raffles for prizes. Just $12 for 3 games & shoe rental. OCT 13                 CHANGE THE ENDING: TELLING AMY'S STORY
Film Documentary w/Discussion 5:30-7:30pm, HUB 260
                                View and discuss one of the most compelling stories on the issue of intimate partner violence. Learn how we can change the ending for other abuse victims.

OCT 17-21          CLOTHESLINE PROJECT: DESIGN & DISPLAY - HUB Bulletin Boards
                                (stop by WRC at 260 Costo Hall to design a paper shirt to display)
Visit the display of t-shirts calling attention to violence, or design a t-shirt of your own to show your feelings about violence to add to the display.

OCT 18                 HEALING SACRED CHOICES: Violence against Native American Women -
4-5:30pm, HUB 268
                                Learn of the prevalence of violence within and outside the native community, and how it impacts the lives of these women and future generations.

OCT 24                 BREAKING THE SILENCE: Domestic Violence in the LGBT Community -
3-5pm, HUB 268
                                Intimate partner violence (IPV) doesn't discriminate. Find out how it impacts the LGBT community and survivors, and learn strategies for safety.

OCT 26                 EXPRESSIVE ART GALLERY - Noon - 2pm, Bell Tower South
                                Express your feelings through art about relationship violence in the deaf and disabled communities. To donate your art for auction at CODIE at a later date, contact Pgaeta at codie.org<mailto:PGaeta at codie.org>, Gmoriarty at codie.or<mailto:GMoriarty at codie.or>, or ericp at ucr.edu<mailto:ericp at ucr.edu> by 10/10.

OCT 26                 SELF-DEFENSE FOR WOMEN & MEN - 6-9pm, Student Rec Center Multipurpose Room A
Participate in this FREE interactive class to learn to identify dangerous situations and people, defend yourself, and prevent assaults. Register in advance - call
827-3337 or stop by the WRC at 260 Costo Hall.

OCT 27                 RAD (Riverside Against Domestic) Violence - 8:30-10:30pm, The Barn
