Anybody up for a challenge?
UC Riverside's Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs James Sandoval is and he is hoping students and campus employees will join him as he during UC Riverside's 10th Annual César E. Chávez 5K Run/Walk from 7:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2. The race begins at the UCR Bell Tower.
Sandoval has issued two challenges to this year's participants. He will donate to the walk fund $10 for the first 100 students who cross the finish line before him. He will also sponsor a breakfast for the department that enters a team and solicits the most money.
Race organizers are also offering $100 to the first place winner of the run, as well as a pizza party to the UCR residence hall that raises the most money.
The event, which is sponsored by Chicano Student Programs, celebrates the legacy of Chávez, the founder and driving force behind the United Farm Workers Union for 31 years and is also a way to raise funds for Riverside area youth programs and for scholarships for high school and UCR students.
The event is being held in conjunction with Cesar E. Chavez Day of Service and learning.
Participants can sign up as individuals or recruit co-workers, friends and family to run as a team. Individuals and teams are encouraged to set a fund raising goal and get friends and family members to support them.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The 5K run/walk will start at 8:30 a.m. and a 1K kids' run, for children 12 and younger, will begin at 9:30 a.m. There'll be an awards ceremony at 10 a.m. A community fair will continue through 11 a.m.
All race participants who turn in $40 or more in pledges or teams that turn in $150 in sponsorships will have their registration fees waived, and will receive an official t-shirt and commemorative token. The top individual and team pledge solicitors will be awarded special prizes.
Registration fees are $20 for individuals, walk or run, $10 for the kids run and $80 for teams (five members).
