Dear UC Riverside Students, Staff, and Faculty,
Caffeinated alcoholic beverages have recently been banned at two US colleges following hospitalizations of several students from alcohol poisoning following consumption of these beverages. Attorneys general from 18 states have become alarmed enough following incidents in each of their states that they have asked the FDA to take action to investigate and restrict these beverages.
The Healthy Campus Climate Partners at UC Riverside (AVC/Dean of Students Office, Campus Health Center, Counseling Center, Housing Services, International Student Programs, Student Recreation Center and Well) would like to take this opportunity to remind you of related resource options available to UC Riverside students.
Specifically:
The Counseling Center at UC Riverside (http://counseling.ucr.edu/) offers various stress management resources that are available to UC Riverside students to promote a good nights rest
The Campus Health Center at UC Riverside (http://campushealth.ucr.edu/) has a Preventive Care Specialist available to work with students on their nutritional choices to promote good health. There are also physicians and nurses available to consult with students about their health concerns.
The Student Recreation Center at UC Riverside (http://www.recreation.ucr.edu ) offers various group and individual fitness options for UC Riverside students to promote physical fitness
The Well (http://well.ucr.edu/) offers peer counselors, online health and well-being related tools, and alcohol education programs for UC Riverside students
The Healthy Campus Climate Partners at UC Riverside are very concerned about caffeinated alcoholic beverage use. Research shows that those that consumed these beverages as compared to those who only consumed alcoholic beverages:
-Were 3 times more likely to become highly intoxicated and
-Were 4 times more likely to intend to drive.
We encourage our students to learn more about the dangers of consuming these beverages and to be safe.
