Dear staff member,
Last week you received an email announcing the introduction of R'Mail
to the campus (a copy is included at the end of this email). Many of
you are already working with or will be working with incoming freshmen
and may have questions about how R'Mail will be introduced to this
cohort.
Below is important information (in the form of FAQ's) about the R'Mail
introduction to this group. Please review the Q & A's so you'll be
able to help incoming freshmen learn about R'Mail.
Why transition incoming freshmen to R'Mail NOW?
Many incoming freshmen have not learned how to access their Webmail
accounts so, introducing them to R'Mail a week before Orientation
starts gives them a chance to learn about R'Mail and gives us the
opportunity to provide in-person support if students have questions at
Orientation.
What is the plan for introducing incoming freshmen to R'Mail?
Incoming freshmen will be introduced to R'Mail beginning June 2
through June 25 by way of an "Announcement" in their personal MyUCR
account.
On June 25, an email blast will be sent to this cohort announcing
R'Mail has replaced WebMail. A link to R'Web will be included as well
as a request to log on to their new R'Mail account through R'Web and
start using R'Mail. (As of June 25, incoming freshmen will be
transitioned to R'Mail exclusively and WebMail will no longer be
available).
How will you promote R'Mail during Orientation?
Orientation Leaders will be provided R'Mail talking points and will
review them with students during the student-to-student session.
Slides about R'Mail will be added to the general slideshow played at
the Welcome and Closing sessions.
A brief introduction to R'Mail and its features will be presented
during Commuter and Housing presentations (all students participate in
either presentation).
Academic colleges will be given talking points and a PowerPoint slide
to add to their presentations highlighting R'Mail features.
Posters promoting R'Mail will be displayed in computer labs during
course registration.
How should I instruct incoming freshmen to access R'Mail?
All incoming freshmen should make a habit of logging into the student
portal, R'web, to access all their UCR applications, including R'Mail.
Direct them to R'Web at http://rweb.ucr.edu.
To gain access to R'Web, incoming freshmen will need his/her NetID and
password or PermPin. If the student does not have his/her NetID and
password or PermPin, he/she can log on to his/her MyUCR account (at
the My UCR ID's tab) to retrieve the information.
After the transition to R'Mail is complete on June 25, R'Mail can also
be accessed at http://rmail.ucr.edu. Logging on to R'web.ucr.edu to
access email is the preferred method because once a student logs on to
R'Web, they are automatically logged on to all their other important
UCR applications like Rmail, Growl, iLearn, and Schedule of Classes.
Can incoming freshmen still log on to WebMail even if they have an
R'Mail account?
No. Once incoming freshmen have been transitioned to R'Mail, (no later
than June 25) they will no longer be able to access their mail through
WebMail. If they attempt to log on, they will receive an error message
telling them their NetID and password (PermPin) is incorrect.
What should I say about R'Mail in the materials I am preparing for
incoming freshmen?
R'Mail is a Google Mail application that performs just like Google Mail.
Students can use the calendar feature to organize their schedules
online for easy access. They can also share events with friends.
Students can store files online for easy access and share documents,
presentations, and spreadsheets.
A "Sites" feature enables students to create websites.
R'Mail provides 7GB of email storage.
A Student's R'Mail account will NOT expire. After they graduate, their
R'Mail account will remain active.

Copy of R'Mail Announcement sent by C & C on 5/28/2010
Dear UCR Staff member,
R’Mail is coming to all students!
As some of you may be aware, over the past year UCR has been offering
students a new e-mail service called R’Mail (Powered by Google), via
an opt-in pilot program. Computing & Communications (C&C) is happy to
announce that the pilot phase has been a great success! A survey of
nearly 1400 pilot users was conducted and below are some highlights of
the feedback received:
99% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement “R’Mail is easy to
use”.
97% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement “I Like R’Mail”.
95% said that R’Mail is “better than Webmail”.
What students are saying about R’Mail:
UCR Student on 5/11/2010, a Senior: “Why haven't you switched the
whole school yet?”
UCR Student on 5/11/2010, a Junior: “Its about time that we switched
to Google Apps. By outsourcing our email and applications to Google i
believe that we will better students ability to communicate with one
another. Thank You!!!”
UCR Student on 5/11/2010, a Junior: “I don't really care about other
apps, but man, Rmail really, really hit the mark in how to provide
good access to e-mail.”
Due to the overwhelming success of the pilot, C&C will start moving
all student e-mail accounts from Webmail to R’Mail soon after finals
end on June 11th, 2010. After the move takes place, students will be
notified that their e-mail account has been migrated via a pop-up
message the next time they log into R’Web (the UCR Student Portal).
C&C expects that the process of moving all student accounts to R’Mail
will be complete by early August.
Incoming students will be introduced to R'mail beginning June 1
through June 25 by way of personalized messaging in their MyUCR
student accounts. An e-mail campaign introducing R'Mail and its
features will be deployed during the same timeframe to this cohort.
C&C is investigating the use of R’Mail by faculty and staff as an
optional service. A campus risk assessment is currently underway and
should be completed by Fall 2010. Contingent upon the findings of the
risk assessment, R’Mail may be offered to faculty and staff (again, as
an OPTIONAL service) beginning sometime in the Fall or Winter of 2010.
