Dear VCSA colleagues:
I am writing to inform you about a play at UC Riverside that is based on the
landmark Supreme Court case and one Nisei's fight against the treatment of
Japanese Americans during WWII. "Dawn's Light" is a remarkable story about
a courageous college-aged civil rights hero, Gordon Hirabayashi, I hope you
will attend this inspiring performance and/or recommend it to the students
you work with.
Special to UCR: Gordon's nephew Lane Hirabayashi taught in the UCR Ethnic
Studies department. Meet playwright Jeanne Sakata and learn where Gordon is
now seven decades after making his principled stand.
Thank you,
Denise Stadelbacher

If the government took your constitutional rights away based on what you
looked like.what would you do?
"DAWN'S LIGHT:
The Journey of Gordon Hirabayashi"
* See the play about the landmark Supreme Court case and one Nisei's
fight against the treatment of Japanese Americans during WWII.
Dawn's Light: The Journey of Gordon Hirabayashi is a solo show that
chronicles the true story of one Japanese-American's enduring fight for his
constitutional rights. Gordon Hirabayashi was a happy-go-lucky
twenty-four-year-old college student living in Seattle when Pearl Harbor was
attacked in late 1941. The government's decision to remove and imprison all
people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast - including American citizens
without due process of law - turned Gordon, a Quaker, into a crusader.
Dawn's Light faithfully documents Gordon's historic decision to heed his
conscience and pursue his faith in the protections of the Constitution all
the way to the Supreme Court.

more.
Playwright Jeanne Sakata will give a brief talk about researching Gordon's
remarkable story after the performance. Sakata is a Sansei actress and
playwright living in Los Angeles.
James Hirabayashi, Gordon's brother, is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology
and Ethnic Studies at SFSU, gives "Dawn's Light" high praise for
contributing to the self knowledge of Asian Americans by expressing the
legitimacy of ethnic lives in our multicultural society.
