Center, and AVC/Dean of Students Office) proudly present:

Fall 2008 Wellness Series

The following series of programs are intended to give you the opportunity to
get the information, guidance and resources you need to support your
well-balanced and healthy lifestyle. We have broken the offerings into
three themed series:

Mental Health Mondays

November 3rd - Relaxation/Meditation Workshop

3:00 PM, Commons 268

Come find out how to manage stress through relaxation and meditation
techniques. This program will help participants get the most out of their
"down time" by blocking out distractions and focusing on controlled
breathing, muscle relaxation and guided mental imagery.

November 10th - Embracing Multicultural Diversity

3:00 PM, Commons 268

While UCR certainly embraces and celebrates the diversity of our campus
community, it's not always as easy as it sounds. This workshop will address
some of the challenges we face and how to effectively navigate through them
so we can continue to grow and develop as an understanding and supportive
community.

November 17th - Stress Management

3:00 PM, Commons 268

Stress is something that in some form or another impacts all of us. Certain
levels of stress are normal and can even be healthy, but too often it can
also get overwhelming and unhealthy when not effectively managed. This
workshop will discuss the many ways we can manage our stress.

November 24th - Managing Family Challenges: Home for the Holidays

3:00 PM, Commons 268

Society and the media portray the holidays as a positive, fun time to spend
with family and friends. However, for some who may not have that positive
"family" structure or support, it can be a challenging and sometimes painful
time. This workshop will discuss how to manage these difficult situations
and circumstances.

Wellness Wednesdays

"The Truth About Suicide" Training

November 5th, 4:00PM, Commons 379

While this workshop is designed as a training for campus peer
educators/mentors, all students are welcome. This program is a video and
discussion that will help students identify and effectively respond to those
who may be contemplating suicide. By being able to recognize early warning
signs, students may be able to play a role in getting someone appropriate
help and support. This workshop is also being held in conjunction with
UCR's Suicide Awareness Week, coordinated by the REACH Peer Education
Program.

Balanced Nutrition in the Chaotic Student World

November 12th, 1:30PM, Commons 260

Let's face it, in the student world it can be tough to find nutritional
balance and options. From constantly having to eat "on the go" or avoiding
that heavy "meal" at midnight to give you energy for late-night studying, it
can be a real challenge. This workshop will discuss ways to make the most
of your limited time and options.

Quitting Smoking: For Yourself or Someone You Care About

November 19th, 1:30PM, Commons 260

Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things anyone can do. Whether
you want to quit yourself or you want to help or support someone you care
about, this workshop will discuss the various strategies and resources
available to support you and those you want to help. This program is also
being held in conjunction with UCR's Tobacco Awareness Week, coordinated by
the Golden ARCHES Peer Health Education Program.

Mental Health "Day Spa"

December 3rd, 11AM-2PM, Commons 302

After a successful inaugural event last spring, this event will be offered
10th week of every quarter. Come experience the many ways you can manage
your stress and anxiety as you head into finals. The event will feature
massage, biofeedback, meditation/relaxation area, stress info, make your own
stress ball, and more.

Fitness Fridays

Body Boot Camp 101

October 31 and November 7, 14, 21, 1-2:30PM, Commons 268

In an effort to bring convenient fitness opportunities to the center of
campus, this activity class is a total body workout. This class offers a
hybrid of basic cardio and body conditioning to improve self-discipline,
self-confidence and self-awareness. Participants will learn how to improve
endurance, focus, speed and power through strenuous drills and techniques.

Fitness Testing

November 21, 11AM-1PM, Commons 260

In an effort to provide a convenient opportunity for students to access
basic fitness assessment and feedback, this session will allow students to
test and discuss body fat/composition, flexibility, grip strength and other
good information. The emphasis will be to provide a convenient and
comfortable atmosphere for those seeking this information and opportunity.

Thanks again to our Wellness Initiative Partners (Health & Wellness
Education Programs, Campus Health Center, Counseling Center, Student
Recreation Center, and AVC/Dean of Students Office) for collaborating on
this series of events.
