Dear Colleagues,
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students,
Susan Allen Ortega has graciously offered to support an audio
conference, Supporting and Serving International Students, for VCSA
staff and others on campus. This is an opportunity for us to
collaborate and think out-of the-box about supporting our
international students on campus at UCR. If you are interested in
joining us for this audio conference, please email me your name and
department affiliation as soon as possible, but no later than Friday,
October 17th as we need to make arrangements for the room and any
necessary audio equipment.
The audio conference will take place on Thursday, October 23rd from
11-12:30 p.m pacific time. Details regarding the audio conference
from PaperClip Communications are listed below. Please contact me if
you have any questions.

>Introducing a New Audio Conference:
>Supporting & Serving International Students:
>Five Critical Questions to Explore
>
>Thursday, October 23rd - 2 pm (est)
> International students are an important and vibrant part of our
> campuses today. And, according to recent reports, international
> students are coming to the US in increasing numbers - and are
> attending a greater diversity of institutions - from two year
> schools and technical colleges to four year institutions.
>
> Like "traditional" students, international students require
> services, support and opportunities to succeed.
>
> Institutions are beginning to think past the "traditional"
> international student services office and looking at ways they can
> make more offices and departments more service and support friendly
> to international students.

>Participation Outcomes
>Consider - along with colleagues and your panelists - these questions::
> * Who Are Your International Students? Understand the various
> spectrum of international study and how to best serve the diverse
> international student population on your campus.
> * What Do Your International Students Want and Need? Understand
> international student attitude and engagement, fears and
> expectations in the college experience.
> * How Do You Ensure Their Safety and Security? Learn how to work
> with international students on understanding the culture,
> expectations, and implications of their choices and behaviors.
> Learn what the colleges' responsibility is for international student safety.
> * How Do You Support Their Success? The U.S. educational system
> is different from many experiences that international students have
> had in their home countries. Learn how to educate international
> students on the variety of academic and co-curricular resources
> available to them and how to take full advantage of them (i.e.
> career services, tutoring, academic advising, activities, etc.).
> * How to Create a Home Away From Home? Explore the various
> residential living implications, language barriers, social
> networking, and more that when addressed can create a welcoming and
> educational environment for both international and domestic
> students on campus.
