Dear Campus Community,

 

Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the US among adults
18-65. Every 16 minutes in the US, someone dies by suicide
(www.outofthedarkness.org <file:///\\www.outofthedarkness.org> ). 

 

The 2008 Out of the Darkness Community Walk to Prevent Suicide will
benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). For the
first time, UC Riverside will be hosting this event on Saturday,
November 8th 2008 (registration begins at 9am at the Bell Tower)! 

 

In honor of the walk, UC Riverside will be hosting various workshops:

 

Suicide Awareness Informational Tabling and Displays

Monday, November 3rd-Friday, November 8th 2008

Check out informational displays and informational tabling around the
Bell Tower and the Commons. Learn more about suicide and how you can
help someone who is considering suicide.

 

Suicide Awareness Resources for Staff and Faculty

Wednesday, November 5th, noon-1:30pm, Commons 268

Counseling Center, R.E.A.C.H.

What do you do when a student talks to you about suicide? This workshop
will provide the tools and resources to best help a student when
discussing suicide.

 

The Truth About Suicide-Joint Peer Educator Training

Wednesday, November 5th, 4-5:30pm, Commons 268

Counseling Center, R.E.A.C.H., Wellness Center

This workshop is an opportunity for all Peer Educators on UCR's campus
to learn more about suicide resources and how to talk to a peer about
suicide.

 

Suicide Awareness 101 and Suicide Awareness Walk Volunteer Meeting

Wednesday, November 5th, 7-8:30pm, Commons 379

Counseling Center, R.E.A.C.H.

What do you do when a fellow student talks to you about Suicide? This
workshop will provide the tools and resources to best help a student
when discussing suicide. We will also discuss volunteer opportunities
related to the upcoming AFSP Walk to Prevent Suicide to be held at UC
Riverside.

 

All the Questions That You Were Afraid to Ask...

Suicide Awareness, Friday, November 7th, 2008, Commons 361, 3-5pm

R.E.A.C.H., Counseling Center

Stop by for a snack and information regarding suicide related resources
on campus. The R.E.A.C.H. peer educators, UC Riverside Social Worker,
and Counseling Center staff will be available for informal questions and
conversation.

 

Walk to Prevent Suicide

R.E.A.C.H., Volunteer Center, AFSP

Saturday, November 8th, 9am-noon, Bell Tower

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, UC Riverside 

Show your support for suicide survivors as a Community. This fundraising
5k walk/run will be held at UC Riverside, for the first time ever! Help
save a life by simply registering to walk at www.outofthedarkness.org
<file:///\\www.outofthedarkness.org> . You will be walking with
thousands of people to raise money for AFSP's research and education
programs to prevent suicide and assist those who have suffered from
suicide loss.
