	A Training on Student Mental Health -
	Protocols, Preparedness and Legal/Ethical Issues


	Dear UCR Colleagues:

	The staff of the Counseling Center at UCR invites you to participate
in a law, ethics and campus communication training with Joe Simanek, JD,
Campus Counsel, Office of the President, on Tuesday, June 19, 9:00 AM - 2:00
PM in College of Engineering Building II, Room 205.  The Counseling Center
will have refreshments available starting at 8:30 AM and will provide a
light lunch during the program.

	Mr. Simanek's talk will include information related to communication
between campus units and confidentiality issues and concerns between our
faculty, staff and administrators especially when discussing distressed
students.  In addition, this meeting will examine the following topics:

*	Enhance our understanding of general legal principles that influence
our interactions with students
*	Review case law regarding suicidal students and its implications for
our response to distressed students
*	Review statutory law
*	Communication: Who, what, when, why, how - what can we say?
*	Avoiding discriminatory actions
*	Overview of parameters for University protocols - with the goal to
develop communication plans for the campus.

	For refreshment and room setup purposes, please RSVP to Marjorie
Tague at marjorie.tague at ucr.edu by June 12th.   There is limited seating
available for this date.  

	Mr. Simanek is presenting a version of this program on each UC
campus.  His goal is to help our campus become aware of the legal issues and
their implications when we attempt to communicate about distressed and
dangerous students.
