On Behalf of Dr. Wallace Cleaves, Director of the University Writing Program:

Welcome to UC Riverside! We are looking forward to your joining the campus community. This message is about steps you need to take to satisfy the UC Entry-Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) in a timely manner. First, you need to review the ways you could, or may have already satisfied the ELWR. It must be satisfied no later than the end of your freshman year, and preferably by the end of your first quarter. Check the list below to see whether you have already satisfied that requirement by at least one of the following methods:

  * 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts; or
  * 63 or better on the ACT, English + Reading
  * 680 or better on the SAT, Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing; or
Please note: The digital SAT Reading and Writing section score has not been approved to meet the ELWR.

  * 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English (Language or Literature) or Seminar; or
  * 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement assessment in Research
  * 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Literature exam
  * 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Literature
  * 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  * 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  * The requirement can also be met by earning a grade of C or higher in a transferable English composition course offered by a college or university.

If you have not satisfied the requirement by one of these methods (our current records indicate that no official documentation has been processed to clear the ELWR), you should sign up to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE).

There is ONE remaining test date for students to complete the AWPE:
Monday, September 23, 2024 - 4PM

This final administration of the AWPE will be held in-person on UCR's main campus. Please note that fall quarter classes do not begin until later in the week (9/26), so you should not have any class conflicts in order to attend the AWPE on September 23rd. The results of the exam will likely be available before the end of the add/drop period for the fall quarter. It's possible that you will be able to adjust your schedule to enroll in the appropriate fall quarter class (provided seats are available) before the add/drop period closes at the end of Week 2.

It is important to satisfy the UCR Entry-Level Writing requirement as soon as possible, particularly since there is a time limit<https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr#time-limit> to satisfy the ELWR.

Please do the following:

  * Visit https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr#awpe for more information about the exam.
  * Register for the exam here<https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bIU6lrnQ3OvlCVE>.
     * Registration for the exam will close at 11:59 PM (PDT) on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

We wish you success at UCR. General information about the Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the Analytical Writing Placement Exam can be found on our website at: https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr.
