On Behalf of Dr. Wallace Cleaves, Director of the University Writing Program:

Welcome to UC Riverside! We are looking forward to your joining the campus community. This message is about steps you need to take to satisfy the UC Entry-Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) in a timely manner. First, you need to review the ways you could, or may have already satisfied the ELWR. It must be satisfied no later than the end of your freshman year, and preferably by the end of your first quarter. Check the list below to see whether you have already satisfied that requirement by at least one of the following methods:

  * 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts; or
  * 63 or better on the ACT, English + Reading
  * 680 or better on the SAT, Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing; or
Please note: The digital SAT Reading and Writing section score has not been approved to meet the ELWR.

  * 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English (Language or Literature) or Seminar; or
  * 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement assessment in Research
  * 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Literature exam
  * 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Literature
  * 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  * 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  * The requirement can also be met by earning a grade of C or higher in a transferable English composition course offered by a college or university.

If you have not satisfied the requirement by one of these methods (our current records indicate that no official documentation has been processed to clear the ELWR), you should sign up to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE). The AWPE will be administered online through Canvas, UCR's learning management system.

Our recommendation: complete the test on one of the upcoming test dates in August:
            August 3rd - 10am or 5pm (PDT)
            August 4th - 10am or 5pm (PDT)

Completing the AWPE in August will ensure your placement information will be available in time to make adjustments to your fall quarter schedule before your registration period closes at the end of August. Additionally, you will ensure you have your placement results before fall quarter instruction begins.

The Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the placement examination have nothing to do with admission to UCR. We are writing to you because you have already been admitted. What you need to do now is begin to make plans to satisfy the UCR Entry-Level Writing requirement as soon as possible.

Please do the following:

  * Visit https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr#awpe for more information about the exam.
  * Register for the exam here<https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bIU6lrnQ3OvlCVE>.
     * Registration for the August tests will close at 11:59 PM (PDT) on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
     * If you had previously registered for the exam in May or June, please resubmit the registration form for your preferred time in August.

We wish you success at UCR. General information about the Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the Analytical Writing Placement Exam can be found on our website at: https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr.
