On Behalf of Professor John Briggs, Director of the University Writing Program:

Welcome to UC Riverside! We are looking forward to your joining the campus community. This message is about steps you need to take to pass the UCR writing requirement in a timely manner. First, you need to review the pathways to satisfying the Entry-Level Writing Requirement. It must be satisfied no later than the end of your freshman year, and preferably by the end of your first quarter. Check the list below to see whether you have already satisfied that requirement by at least one of the following methods:

  * 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts; or
  * 63 or better on the ACT, English + Reading
  * 680 or better on the SAT, Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing; or
  * 3 or above on either Advanced Placement Examination in English; or
  * 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Literature exam
  * 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Literature
  * 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  * 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
  * The requirement can also be met by earning a grade of C or higher in a transferable English composition course offered by a college or university.

If you have not satisfied the requirement by one of these pathways (our current records indicate you have not yet done so), you should sign up to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam on the UCR campus on one of the many dates the exam is available. Our recommendation: If you test in May or June, your placement information will be available when you register for fall quarter classes during your Highlander Orientation session. Early testing reduces the chance you will need to modify your fall schedule later in the summer to take account of your placement information. If you cannot test early, you will be able to test during your in-person orientation session.

The Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the placement examination have nothing to do with admission to UCR. We are writing to you because you have already been admitted. What you need to do now is begin to make plans to pass the UCR Entry-Level Writing requirement as soon as possible.

Please do the following:

  * Visit https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr#awpe for more information about the exam.
  * Register for the May or June exam here<https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5swZnqJVLHnpJgq>.
  * Students requesting accommodations for the exam should contact<https://sdrc.ucr.edu/incoming-admitted-students-disabilities> the Student Disability Resource Center at least 3 weeks before the test date.

We wish you success at UCR. General information about the Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the Analytical Writing Placement Exam can be found on our website at: https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr.
