Dr. Cynthia Villarreal

"Embracing the Borderlands of Hispanic serving institutions:
A look at faculty hiring, organizational culture, and HSI Consciousness"

Tuesday, November 30
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PST

Although Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) are lauded for increasing access to higher education and for broadening grant opportunities, scholars and practitioners are still interrogating what it means to serve Latinx students at HSIs. At a minimum, institutional actors must have a consciousness of the HSI designation and mission when developing policy and making decisions.

In this talk, Dr. Villarreal examines how consciousness of HSI designation is enacted during the faculty hiring process. She investigated the experiences of faculty search chairs at two HSIs to examine how hiring reveals organizational culture. Using the findings of two case studies, Dr. Villarreal developed a framework informed by Chicana feminist theory for embedding and embodying HSI consciousness in decision-making, policy, and practice.

About the Equity & Justice Research Series

SOE's speaker series aims to engage the education research of SOE students and faculty focused on equity and justice, and to also explore what equity and justice work looks like in practice. The series invites researchers to present to students and faculty in an informal setting to encourage dialogue and discussion. SOE is currently taking submissions for presenters. Presenters do not need to present advanced papers but may instead use the interaction with event participants to help refine their ideas and ongoing work. Students and faculty alike are encouraged to apply. If you’d like to be considered, send your name, presentation title, and abstract to Dr. Eddie Comeaux<https://ucr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=92509ee62a93fda2fa3ccdb7f&id=49b3be2db1&e=3ab5c9548d>.
