Greetings GSOE Community,

The Graduate School of Education (GSOE) is delighted to announce a new undergraduate minor in Athletic Leadership, launching in the fall 2020 term. This minor, open to students of any Major, prepares students in the program to excel in competitive leadership positions in sport related fields that include, but are not limited to: sport administration (scholastic, collegiate, and professional), sport management, coaching, community and youth sports, fitness clubs and wellness organizations, and parks and recreations. The structured curriculum combines current research, contemporary issues, applied theory, policy issues and challenges, and practical skill development in order to position students for successful careers. In keeping with a shared vision of the GSOE, a focus on education as a vehicle for equity, justice, and change in athletics will be underscored in this new minor.

A total of 20 units are required for this minor, including one lower division course and four upper division courses. In addition to the required minor courses, students can also complete a capstone project with their faculty advisor, exploring an athletics-related question or problem of their choice. Internship credit hours are available to provide students with important hands-on experience only if the credit hours and field experience are approved by the academic advisor. Students are responsible for identifying their own internships.

1. Lower-division requirements (4 units): EDUC 050

2. Upper-division requirements (16 units): EDUC 147, EDUC 150, EDUC 152, EDUC 154

Additional courses in the minor:
Capstone Project: EDUC 190
Internship: EDUC 198i

Courses already completed prior to official enrollment in the minor may be applied to the program requirements.

Note that students who are pursuing a B.A. in Education, Society, and Human Development will be allowed to add the Athletic Leadership minor, but they will not be allowed to use courses from the minor to also satisfy any of the lower or upper division requirements for the major. Courses can only be counted for one program. The GSOE offers an array of courses in major to allow students to complete the B.A. degree and the minor without any issues. Students will need to meet with their academic advisor to ensure they are meeting the requirements in each area.

Students who are interested in pursuing this exciting minor or learning more about it should contact program Director for the Athletic Leadership minor, Dr. Eddie Comeaux, at eddie.comeaux at ucr.edu<mailto:eddie.comeaux at ucr.edu>
