Medicare – New cards being sent throughout October 2024


The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has notified Medicare plans that beneficiaries affected by the 2023 MOVEit software breach will be receiving new Medicare cards throughout October 2024.

Impacted members will receive CMS notification letters and new Medicare cards with reassigned Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs), effective November 20, 2024. CMS will also provide the new MBI information to our Medicare plans. The total count of UC members with new MBIs is unknown at this time; so far, the count is low.

Important Updates:

·         The MBI reassignment by CMS is due to a security vulnerability identified with the MOVEit software breach. MOVEit handles Medicare Part A/B claims and related services for CMS.


·         UC Medicare plan and Via Benefits members with new MBIs do not need to do anything if they are staying with their current plans. Members who are making plan changes will need to provide their new MBIs.


·         The RASC Insurance team is working with the Medicare plans to track UC members with new MBIs through the end of October 2024 and will update the Redwood system.


·         Medicare carriers through Via Benefits will update their systems. Via Benefits will provide RASC with the new MBI information.

Medicare members with new Medicare cards should properly destroy their old cards and use their new cards.
