The UCR Emeriti (UCREA) and Retirees' (UCRRA) Associations invites you to attend the upcoming Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Lecture Talk Series. Each year three retired UCR faculty are awarded Edward A. Dickson Professorships to support their research, teaching, or public service activities. In the year following their awards, Dickson Professors give public presentations of their work.

"The Art-Historical Genre that Dare not Speak its Name? Authorship, objects and reconfiguring the sculptural catalogue raisonné"
Presenter: Dickson awardee Malcolm Baker | Date: Tuesday, June 3, 2025
Time: 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. | Location: In-person at University Extension Building 1101 in the University Village and Livestreamed via Zoom

Description
In the popular imagination an "art book" is very often understood to consist of an illustrated study of the life and works of an individual artist. But changes within art history as a discipline has meant that the art historical monograph, while often still devoted to a single artist has become more thematic and the catalogue raisonné has increasingly been seen as something done in the museum rather than the academy. This lecture will suggest that recent engagement of scholars within the humanities with the "material turn" has opened up new possibilities for the catalogue raisonné, especially of a sculptor's work. How might this marginalised genre be re-configured so as to serve new interpretative purposes?

Refreshments will be provided
