The UCR Retirees’ (UCRRA) and Emeriti (UCREA) Associations invites you to attend the upcoming Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Lecture Talk Series. Each year three retired UCR faculty are awarded Edward A. Dickson Professorships to support their research, teaching, or public service activities. In the year following their awards, Dickson Professors give public presentations of their work.

“Thinking Like an Actor”

Description
Now Professor Emeritus, Eric Barr taught directing and acting, and served frequently as chair of the Department of Theatre at UC Riverside, from 1975 to 2013. He suffered a massive heart infection after surgery in 2013 to replace a valve and an aortic aneurysm. The infection further led to devastating strokes in both sides of his brain that left him paralyzed, unable to speak or swallow, and confused. During the recovery from his strokes, Barr discovered that learning to walk, talk, and function like a person again involved using strategies and processes similar to those that actors use to develop believable characters. Barr's Dickson Lecture examines the connections between acting and recovery from life changing events and how he was able to use actor training to help reconstruct himself after losing speech, movement, and many cognitive abilities.
