College of the Month:
University Hawaii Manoa

About
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa was founded in 1907 under the Morrill Act as a land-grant college of agriculture and mechanic arts. In 1912 the newly-named College of Hawaiʻi relocated to Mānoa Valley and the first permanent building—known today as Hawaiʻi Hall—was erected amid pig farms and kiawe groves. The college became the University of Hawaiʻi in 1920 with the addition of a College of Arts and Sciences. The Territorial Normal and Training School (now the College of Education) joined the University in 1931.

Student Life
The Admissions Committee at UH Mānoa takes a holistic look at a student's academic record when reviewing an application. We take into consideration a student's completion of the high school courses listed below, their grade performance, any academic trends in courses and/or grades, and the curricular rigor of their courses. In alignment with our institutional commitment to serve the higher educational needs of the State of Hawai’i, all Hawai’i residents who apply for admission with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and who have successfully completed the high school academic/courses requirements will be offered admission to UH Mānoa. In-state tuition for students is $32,331 and for out-of-state students is $37,983. They offer various majors from nursing, business, medicine and many more.

Career of the Month:Veterinarian

Veterinarians examine, diagnose and treat animals. They can also perform surgeries, care for wounds, vaccinate against diseases and prescribe medications. In worst-case scenarios, vets are also qualified to euthanize sick or dying animals. Technology in the field has also evolved. Vets are now using everything from advanced surgical technologies to fight cancer to MRIs to care for animals. Genomics are also being used to test for specific genetic traits.

But a veterinarian's work doesn't stop with dogs and cats. Some vets specialize in caring for farm animals, and some even protect the safety of our food supply by inspecting livestock. Others promote public health by fighting animal-borne diseases and help foster healthier relationships between people and their animal companions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 19.4% employment growth for veterinarians between 2021 and 2031.Veterinarians made a median salary of $100,370 in 2021. The best-paid 25% made $128,410 that year, while the lowest-paid 25% made $78,920.

An overview of how to become a Veterinarian
________________________________

  * Earn a bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields: biology, animal science, agricultural science and etc...
  * Work with animals. Applicants with experience will stand out to veterinary programs. This could include working with animals in an animal shelter or in a veterinarian's office.
  * Attend a veterinary program. Accredited doctor of veterinary medicine programs usually take about four years to complete, with the final year reserved for clinical rotations.
  * Get licensed. All states and the District of Columbia require that vets be licensed. They can get their license by graduating from an accredited program and passing the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination. States might also require vets to sit for an additional state exam.
