*Tutoring & Study Tips*

Upward Bound is happy to announce that a new academic mentor has been added
to the UB family and will be joining us soon! Tutoring hours for Academic
Mentors David Chavez-Barragan and Elizabeth Benitez will resume this month.
Students are welcome to attend any session they prefer and do NOT have to
stay the entire time.

*College of the Month: Cal State San Diego*

*About*
San Diego State University was founded in 1897. It is a public research
university and a Hispanic-serving institution. Its 300-acre campus is
located in San Diego. SDSU is the oldest higher education institution in
San Diego. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 31,321, and
admissions are very selective, with an acceptance rate of 38%. The
university awards 190 bachelor's degrees, 91 master's degrees, and 30
doctoral degrees. SDSU also has a world-renowned international business
program along with an exceptional engineering program. Forbes Magazine
ranked SDSU No.16 on its list of Top 25 U.S. Public Colleges. The average
cost of attendance for undergraduate residents is $34,072 and $46,952 for
out-of-state.

*Student Life*

SDSU is filled with lots of possibilities where students can engage
in through concerts, museums, and recreational activities in the city of
San Diego. San Diego State University offers various student services,
including nonremedial tutoring, women's center, placement service, day
care, and health service. The campus also offers campus safety and security
services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport/escort
service, 24-hour emergency telephones, student patrols, and controlled
dormitory access. In athletics, the university currently sponsors six men's
and thirteen women's sports programs at the varsity level. With over 300
student organizations, every student at SDSU has an opportunity to stay
involved and explore their interests through clubs such as the Debating
Club, the Associated Student Body, or The Rowing Association.
*Career of the Month: Occupational Therapist*
Occupational therapists work with patients with mental, physical,
developmental, or emotional disabilities. They help these patients develop,
recover, or maintain the skills needed for daily living and working.
Occupational therapists are skilled in the social, emotional, and physical
effects of an illness, injury, or disability. They may plan treatment
programs and teach patients how to use adaptive equipment. Occupational
therapists will work with doctors, nurses, and occupational therapy
assistants to treat patients of all ages. Some of the common tasks and
duties include evaluating patients and determining goals for treatment,
re-evaluating patients to ensure goals are met, and adjusting treatment
plans to reflect changes in ability.

In order to become an occupational therapist, you need to obtain a
bachelor's degree typically in biology, psychology, kinesiology or a health
science major as prerequisite courses are required for admission to
graduate school. Then, you need to complete a Master's degree program in
occupational therapy. After completing your graduate-level occupational
therapy program, you must pass the National Board for Certification of
Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam in order to become certified. Lastly,
Occupational therapists are required to complete continuing education
credits each year to keep their license active. The job growth in
Occupational Therapy is expected to grow by 17% from 2020 to 2030.

*An overview of how to become a Occupational Therapist*
------------------------------

   - Earn a bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields: biology,
   psychology, sociology, kinesiology, or a health science major
   - Work with patients with medical issues and complications. Applicants
   with experience will stand out to occupational therapy programs. This could
   include working with patients with medical issues in hospitals,
   rehabilitation centers, psychiatric, or nursing homes.
   - Attend a Master's degree program in Occupational therapy. Some
   programs can combine bachelor's and master's degrees into one occupational
   therapy program that can be completed in a total of 5 years.
   - Get licensed.
