Career of the Month: Registered Behavior Technician

A registered behavior technician is a certificated paraprofessional who works in applied behavior analysis. Key responsibilities are helping children and individuals with Autism or other disabilities learn new skills and improve their behaviors. Their duties include providing direct behavior-analytic services, help implementing behavior plans, and collecting data. There are a variety of work settings you can work from as a RBT such as in homes, schools, and clinics.

In this role, day-to-day tasks vary depending on the work setting but for the most part it includes reviewing their client's notes and treatment plans in preparation for their sessions, setting up materials or equipment such as toys or communication devices, and collecting data. In sessions, RBTs will work one-on-one or with groups to teach new skills and behaviors using ABA techniques. Some strategies they use are positive reinforcement to encourage good behaviors or redirect problem behaviors using prompting. Typically at the end of their sessions, data is collected on the client's progress and then reported back to their supervisor which will be used to update their treatment plans.

In order to get RBT certified, you need to be at least 18 years old, have a minimum of a high school diploma, and pass the criminal background check. Once you meet the eligibility, you need to complete a 40-hour training course on the curriculum requirements of the RBT task list which includes three hours in ethnics and professional conduct either on-line or in-person conducted by a board-certified behavior analyst. Then, you must submit an application for the RBT certification and take a RBT competency assessment test within 90 days. After completing your trainings and applying for the RBT Credential, you must pass the RBT exam that consists of 75 multiple choice questions that covers assessment, behavior reduction, and documentation. Once you pass the exam, you are qualified to work as a registered behavior technician under the supervision of a board-certified behavior analyst.

Degree Level
RBT certification is required along with some college credits; BA is preferred

Licensing
No licensing needed, but a RBT certification is Required
