Countless ongoing research efforts supported by over $25 million in awards.

Our mission is only possible because of our students, who represent a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. To make sure all our students can be successful, we constantly cultivate a wholly supportive learning environment that celebrates our community’s differences. This effort is enhanced by our university’s designation as a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) by the U.S. Department of Education under Titles III and V of the Higher Education Act. As an MSI, we can access more benefits and funding to build infrastructure, expand academic programs, and develop resources to improve the success of low-income and minority students. This designation is more than a title to display — it’s an exciting opportunity for continued improvement in diversity, equity and inclusion on our campus and beyond.

Career of the Month: Speech-Language Pathologist
[https://mcusercontent.com/0d0244cb97426858e89e8fe0f/images/ff5ced13-a42b-6bfb-2932-36ece3be193c.jpg]

Speech-language pathologists, also called SLPs, are experts in communication. SLPs work with people of all ages, from babies to adults. SLPs treat many types of communication and swallowing problems. These include problems with: Speech sounds—how we say sounds and put sounds together into words. Other words for these problems are articulation or phonological disorders, apraxia of speech, or dysarthria. Language—how well we understand what we hear or read and how we use words to tell others what we are thinking. In adults this problem may be called aphasia. Literacy—how well we read and write.
People with speech and language disorders may also have trouble reading, spelling, and writing. Social communication—how well we follow rules, like taking turns, how to talk to different people, or how close to stand to someone when talking. This is also called pragmatics. Voice—how our voices sound. We may sound hoarse, lose our voices easily, talk too loudly or through our noses, or be unable to make sounds. Fluency—also called stuttering, is how well speech flows. Someone who stutters may repeat sounds, like t-t-t-table, use "um" or "uh," or pause a lot when talking. Many young children will go through a time when they stutter, but most outgrow it. Cognitive communication—how well our minds work. Problems may involve memory, attention, problem-solving, organization, and other thinking skills. Feeding and swallowing—how well we suck, chew, and swallow food and liquid. A swallowing disorder may lead to poor nutrition, weight loss, and other health problems. This is also called dysphagia.
Some speech-language pathologists work in schools. Others work in private practice or in hospitals or nursing and residential care facilities. Most speech-language pathologists are full-time, but part-time work is common. Speech-language pathologists typically need at least a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. All states require that speech-language pathologists be licensed. Licensure requirements vary by state but typically include clinical experience and passing an exam. The median annual wage for speech-language pathologists was $79,060 in May 2021.
