Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and this is the time when we can learn about inspiring individuals that have impacted us. We wanted to highlight one woman in particular, and that wonderful woman was Janet Johnson. Mrs. Johnson earned a bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College and a master's in education with the completion of some doctoral studies from the University of Florida. She arrived at Jacksonville University in 1971 as the first black faculty member. In 1977, she brought the Upward Bound program, a federally funded program that helps promising students at struggling high schools prepare for college to Jackson University. Mrs. Johnson's late husband, Earl Johnson Sr. was the first African-American president and attorney-adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. More than 14,000 students participated during her 22 years as director. She also started a Special Services program to assist financially or culturally disadvantaged students. Because of her passion for education, she helped many students in the program go on to college and have successful careers. She was a Times-Union EVE Award recipient in the education category in 1984. She retired from Jackson University in 1999 and received the Jackson University's Humanitarian Award in 2001. Unfortunately, she died at age 79, but we honor her and many other people who paved the way for opportunities for first-generation and low-income students.

The University of California, Santa Cruz, was founded in 1965 as a bold experiment in higher education, blossoming in short time into a global research university and a creative powerhouse. A campus with world-class facilities and one of the most visually spectacular settings in higher education, UC Santa Cruz offers rigorous academic programs and cutting-edge research opportunities that guide students in how to think, not what to think. United by the pursuit of social and environmental justice and driven by passion and curiosity, our students, faculty, staff, and alumni innovate across disciplines, seek to push the envelope of knowledge, and deploy their expertise and voice to advocate for transformative change. We are bold in our ideas, determined in our pursuits, and distinguished for our societal impact.

>From 652 students in 1965, the campus has grown to its current (2020–21) enrollment of more than 17,000 students. Undergraduates pursue bachelor's degrees in 66 different majors supervised by divisional deans of arts, engineering, humanities, physical and biological sciences. Graduate study began at UC Santa Cruz in 1966 with programs in astronomy, biology, and history of consciousness, a program that combines the humanistic disciplines with links to the social sciences, natural sciences, and arts. In 1967, the campus introduced graduate programs in chemistry, literature, and Earth & planetary sciences. In conjunction with graduate teaching and intellectual inquiry, the campus is home to three Organized Research Units: the Genomics Institute, Institute of Marine Sciences, and Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics. The University of California Observatories/Lick Observatory is a Multicampus Research Unit headquartered at UC Santa Cruz. UC's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP), a Multicampus Research Unit, includes a branch on the UCSC campus established in 1999. UC Santa Cruz also is one of several UC campuses sponsoring the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3), and the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), two of the California Institutes for Science and Innovation established in 2000–02. The research <https://us18.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ucsc.edu%2Fresearch%2Fprograms.html&xid=a3e7231a56&uid=93296073&iid=10558634&pool=template_test&v=2&c=1675360450&h=3dc4d04b965d4cf2154afe7e461b8cfa3f8ea8f8c1c5e5c7f0b9bac1ad0b45eb> programs <https://us18.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ucsc.edu%2Fresearch%2Fprograms.html&xid=a3e7231a56&uid=93296073&iid=10558634&pool=template_test&v=2&c=1675360450&h=3dc4d04b965d4cf2154afe7e461b8cfa3f8ea8f8c1c5e5c7f0b9bac1ad0b45eb> website has more details and a complete list of research groups.

The 10 UC Santa Cruz undergraduate colleges — each a separate community with its own buildings and administration — are built around a core of shared university facilities. These include the main and science/engineering libraries, performing arts buildings, visual arts studios, classrooms, computer facilities, and a complex of highly specialized buildings for the physical and biological sciences, and for engineering. Both the east and west sides of the campus feature athletic facilities. Donors provided significant private funds — gifts to the campus valued more than $75 million in 2015–16 — to build or enhance academic, student-life, and other facilities at the campus, as well as fund programs, research, and scholarships. In the fall of 2013, the campus publicly announced its first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign. The effort raised more than $335 million, surpassing the $300 million goal in 2016, well before its planned conclusion on June 30, 2017.

Career of the Month: Kinesiologist

Kinesiology is the study of the body's movement. Kinesiology specialists use their knowledge of human physiology and movement to help recover patients' mobility and improve their lives through exercise. A kinesiologist tests muscles and develops treatment plans to improve their function. They may be able to identify sources of stress—also known as “imbalances”—in structural, chemical and emotional energy, in the body and provide rehabilitation to eliminate them. Kinesiologists can work in a variety of settings, including offices, laboratories, recreation facilities, hospitals, schools and residential facilities. They work for organizations that develop and implement fitness plans for individuals or that study human movement.
An associate in kinesiology is best suited to those pursing entry-level work in the fitness training industry. The degree generally takes 1-2 years to complete, depending on whether you take courses at a full- or part-time pace. Coursework explores introductory anatomy and physiology, exercise science, and psychology. Graduates of kinesiology associate programs can transition directly to working as fitness consultants, personal trainers, and fitness instructors. With additional training, they can also work as massage therapists and physical therapists. A bachelor's in kinesiology, which typically takes four years to complete, goes into further depth on the study of human movement and exercise than an associate degree<https://us18.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fthebestschools.org%2Fdegrees%2Fwhat-is-an-associates-degree%2F&xid=a3e7231a56&uid=93296073&iid=10558634&pool=template_test&v=2&c=1675360450&h=5e3cda49b936973b5431f5a3b90c4db32e308d6415417335b8b6d65fdbda14e0>. Students explore how fitness trainers, physical education educators, and therapists use exercise as a form of medicine. A bachelor's program is best suited to students who want to become certified athletic trainers or work as physical education teachers.
Kinesiology jobs offer modest earnings at the entry level, with the potential for greater earnings upon moving into administrative positions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics<https://us18.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bls.gov%2Fooh%2Fpersonal-care-and-service%2Ffitness-trainers-and-instructors.htm&xid=a3e7231a56&uid=93296073&iid=10558634&pool=template_test&v=2&c=1675360450&h=a4317984d41a8fa11f60191722d890c9f1b50a07a84297ed1023e5a00d6b55b3> (BLS) reports that fitness instructors earned a median salary of $40,390 in 2019, while sports managers made almost twice that at $73,740. Entry-level kinesiology jobs remain in high demand. For instance, BLS data projects that employment for athletic trainers will grow by 16% from 2019-2029.
