Upward Bound is happy to announce that our tutoring services have officially started! Please welcome our Academic Mentors David Chavez-Barragan and Elizabeth Benitez. Students are welcome to attend any session they prefer and do NOT have to stay the entire time.

Riverside City College

About
Riverside City College (RCC) is an urban college that is a part of the California Community Colleges System in Riverside, California with over 21,000 students and a student-faculty ration of 27-to-1. Since opening in 1916 RCC has been named the BEST Community College and 2nd Best Career College by Press Enterprise. RCC has also been ranked 4th in the nation for associate degrees and 11th in enrollment of Hispanic students by The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine in 2021. RCC is classified as a a public college with a semester system and open admissions policy. This college currently offers a $0 application fee, an average cost of $1,104 for fulltime students and $46 per unit. RCC has 60% of it's students receive the California College Promise tuition waiver and spends over 34 million in financial aid and student employment. RCC offers over 100 degrees and certificates in a variety of subjects including, but not limited to computer science, cosmetology, education, journalism, and nursing.

Student Life

Being located in downtown Riverside allows for RCC to have great relationships with the local and regional community. RCC students can participate in local discounts and enjoy services provided by the Cosmetology Salon, Culinary Arts Academy and the Cybersecurity Center. RCC currently has over 75 student clubs and organizations for students to participate in. This college has the Rainbow Engagement Center, La Casa - Latino Development, The Umoja Community - African/African-America, Foster Youth and Guardian Scholars, and Veterans centers available for students to find their community.


Career of the Month:
Forensic Scientist

A Forensic Scientist aids criminal investigations by gathering evidence, photographing findings, analyzing evidence through scientific procedures, visiting morgues, comparing evidence, documenting finds, and testifying as an expert witness in court. As a forensic scientist you must consistently keep up with new technology and science to improve the collection of evidence. This job is one that will constantly be hiring and is expected to be a high-growth career with employment according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

To become a forensic scientist you must complete a bachelor's degree in any physical or biological science (e.g., forensics, biology, molecular biology, chemistry, etc.) with 8 semesters of general chemistry and 3 semesters of quantitative analysis. A forensic scientist must also take a Training and Experience questionnaire and pass a 70% or higher in order to get a position in the Bureau of Forensic Sciences (BFS). Once getting a position, you will begin on-the-job training and work under experienced investigators to grow your knowledge.
