My name is Daniela Coronado, and I am the new Assistant Director for UB RCJ. My experience with UB has taken on various forms: first I participated in the Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program, then served as a student staff with UB during my years at UC Davis, and I previously held the High School Advisor position with our Classic Program. Although I took a brief break-in-service from UB, I am thrilled to be back.

A Probation Officer plays a role within the Criminal Justice System. Similar to a parole officer, they tend to supervise offenders who are released from prison or non-custodial sanctions and monitor for upcoming hearings. However, Probation Officers tend to deal more with minors who have been or are in danger of falling into the Criminal Justice System because of possession of firearms, illegal substances or activities, or Gang Affiliation.

Probation Officers take part in both in- office and out-in-the-field duties. Their in office duties consist of writing reports and testifying in court against or for their assigned offender. Writing reports usually consist of updates on the offender, new findings within their cases, and house visit reports. Out in the field they are required to do home visits or more-so-called house inspections. These inspections consist of looking for parole violations such as drugs, alcohol, or marijuana. They also need to ensure their youth comply with acceptable behavior and meeting with court ordered standards, such as community service or school compliance.

Probation Officers typically work a 40-hour week in the office that consist of Monday- Friday and since they work with high-risk youth they are also on-call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Saturday and Sundays usually consist of house visits and home inspections along with on-call alerts for their offenders' arrest when caught in illegal actions.
