Students, as you may know, February is Black History Month, and this is the time when we can learn about inspiring individuals that have impacted us. We wanted to highlight one woman in particular, and that wonderful woman was Janet Johnson. Mrs. Johnson earned a bachelor's degree from Morris Brown College and a master's in education with the completion of some doctoral studies from the University of Florida. She arrived at Jacksonville University in 1971 as the first black faculty member. In 1977, she founded Upward Bound, a federally funded program that helps promising students at struggling high schools prepare for college. Mrs. Johnson's late husband, Earl Johnson Sr. was the first African-American president and attorney-adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. More than 14,000 students participated during her 22 years as director. She also started a Special Services program to assist financially or culturally disadvantaged students. Because of her passion for education, she helped many students in the program go on to college and have successful careers. She was a Times-Union EVE Award recipient in the education category in 1984. She retired from Jackson University in 1999 and received the Jackson University's Humanitarian Award in 2001. Unfortunately, she died at age 79, but we honor her and many other people who paved the way for opportunities for first-generation and low-income students.

An immigration lawyer is a legal professional who helps people from other countries who wish to live, work or study within the United States. Immigration lawyers work with people regardless of their residential status. They represent their clients in court and provide them counseling in regards to their legal rights and obligations. Some common types of cases for immigration lawyers include: Employment-based green cards, Temporary work visas, Student visas, Asylum seekers, Deportation and removal proceedings, Applying for a return after deportation, Denied immigration application, and Criminal proceedings.

Immigration lawyers need a total of seven years of full-time study after high school to obtain a Juris Doctor degree. Once you complete your undergraduate degree you will need a few more months to pass the bar exam and meet local bar association requirements. Those who pass the bar exam on their first try can be licensed as attorneys about seven and a half years after graduating from high school. California, Florida, North Carolina and Texas all now offer specializations in immigration law through their respective bar associations. Passing one of their certification tests demonstrates to potential clients the level of your competence in immigration law.
