The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science has evolved and grown, shaped by the needs of the community it serves. Located in the Watts-Willowbrook section of South Los Angeles, the institution benefits from its location and the corresponding diversity and complexity of its patient population by creating an academic environment unlike any other. Through innovative basic science, the University conducts education, patient care and research programs-training physicians and allied health professionals to provide care to underserved populations.
Following nearly a decade of community-based advocacy for improved medical services, the University was incorporated in August of 1966. In response to the lack of adequate medical facilities in the area, the institution later became a University and changed its name in 1987 to reflect its expanded academic role and identity. The University is named in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew, a brilliant African-American physician, famous for his pioneering work in blood preservation. His dedication to learning and the sharing of knowledge to benefit mankind is the inspiration for the University.
The 11-acre campus includes a day care facility, elementary school, high-school, biomedical library, central administration, educational & learning resources, (basic, clinical and population-based research facilities), and housing for postgraduate students. Based on the concept of the “educational pipeline,” a child could conceivably start out in day care, complete all the necessary levels of schooling and graduate as a practicing physician all on one campus.
The University strives to improve the health status of under served communities through innovative biomedical research, and progressive health policies. By maintaining and expanding relationships with local medical schools, research institutions and community-based organizations, Drew is focused on eliminating the health disparities by providing access to and delivery of healthcare services to underserved populations.

The radiologic technologists must know the principles of anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiographic imaging, radiation safety, the operation of many types of X-ray and computerized equipment, the professional care and handling of patients, and the management of a radiology department or division.

Individuals considering a career as a radiographer should excel in math and science, communication, and critical thinking. Be sure to take advantage of high school courses like anatomy and physiology, computer sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, and algebra. Radiographers work with doctors to treat patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Some common tasks and duties include: Assessing, evaluating, and testing patients, preparing and positioning patients for imaging, attending to patient needs during imaging procedures, applying and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of radiation protection and safety practices, independently performing or assisting a licensed practitioner in performing procedures such as mammograms, X-ray exams, MRIs, or administering radiation to cancer patients and preparing, administering, and documenting activities related to medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and institutional policy.

With additional training and experience, some radiographers move into managerial roles such as shift supervisor or chief radiologic technologist. Others move into education positions such as a clinical instructor or program director. Radiographers can also earn specialty certificates to increase opportunities for advancement such as in mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), or interventional radiology.

Degree Level

There are college-based programs and hospital-based programs that may award a college degree directly or through affiliation with major colleges and universities. After graduating from an accredited program, radiographers must pass a certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in order to become certified and registered as an R.T.(R). Depending on the state of residency, radiologic technologists may also be required to meet additional state licensure requirements to practice as an R.T.(R).

Licensing

According to the ARRT, in order to meet the education requirement for the certification exam, you must have earned an associate’s degree or higher from an ARRT-recognized educational program.

Experience

The best experience one can have is taking the proper medical classes and becoming certified in R.T.(R).

Key Skills

There are also some ethics requirements including demonstrating good moral character, responsibility, and trustworthiness.

Median Salary (2021)*

$61,370 on average in the United States.
