College Spotlight: California State University, Channel Islands

California State University, Channel Islands is a public university in Ventura County, California, which opened in 2002 as the 23rd campus in the California State University system. The 2022 USNWR Best Regional Colleges West Rankings ranks Channel Islands 17 on Top Performers on Social Mobility, 20 on Top Public Schools and 251 in Nursing. The university is a Hispanic-serving institution.

Channel Islands offers 54 types of Bachelor's degrees, 6 different graduate (Master's) degrees, 19 teaching credentials, and an Ed.D degree.

Popular majors for undergraduates included Psychology at 19.25%, Business Administration at 13.98%, and Sociology at 7.85%. While popular majors for graduates were Business Administration at 37.86%, Education (General) at 26.21% and Biotechnology at 17.48%. CSUCI offers a Combined-degree programs in MS Biotechnology/MBA as of 2020.

Students can join various student organizations, utilize waterfront programs such as sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking, honor societies, leadership retreats and workshops, multicultural programs, sports clubs, block parties, and career and graduate fairs.
CSU Channel Islands is home to about 6,943 students and 490 faculty members with a student-faculty ratio of 22:1. Full-time undergraduate tuition is $6,802 annually. After factoring in the costs of food & housing ($16,300), books & supplies ($1,126), misc. ($2,466), and transportation ($1,380) the estimated total cost of attendance for undergraduates starting in Fall 2022 is $28,144.

Career of the Month: Biotechnologist

A biotechnologist uses biological organisms to create and improve products and processes. They work in areas as diverse as food and agriculture, environmental conservation and medicine.
Biotechnologists seek to understand and manipulate the basic building blocks of living things, and they use the techniques of molecular biology to do so. They study the genetic, chemical and physical attributes of cells, tissues and organisms, and identify practical uses for this knowledge.
Among other things, a biotechnologist in the area of food and agriculture might produce enzymes and preservatives for use in food and drink products, or they might genetically modify crops to increase yields. An environmental biotechnologist might convert plants into biofuels or create plant-based bioplastics, and a medical biotechnologist will research and produce new pharmaceutical drugs and medical treatments.
The job of a biotechnologist involves:

  *   designing and implementing research studies
  *   developing new research procedures
  *   working with lab technicians on research
  *   setting up the laboratory equipment to conduct and monitor experiments
  *   collecting, studying and testing samples such as food, cells, tissues, blood samples, bacteria cultures and living organisms
  *   recording findings and analysing the results
  *   identifying how the research can be applied to improving human life

Degree Level
Master's or PhD in a relevant scientific subject such as biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental biology or chemical engineering.
Licensing
No specific licensing is required for entry-level jobs.
Experience
Research work, internships, laboratory placements and experience gained using relevant scientific and analytical techniques

Seniors, take a look at the list below to help you stay on top of your monthly tasks. Reach out to the UB Staff if you have any questions and keep us updated on your college acceptances so that we can walk you through the next steps!

Check Your Email and College Portals At Least Once a Week

  *   Make sure you don’t miss deadlines, admissions information, or other important correspondence.
If You're a Student on the Waitlist...

  *   Ensure that you're on top of communications with the school and submit all requested information.
Review Your Financial Aid Packages From Colleges

  *    Some schools will release financial aid award letters this month. Discuss them with your parents, school counselor, and UB staff.
Plan a Visit or Virtual Tour

  *   If you are still on the fence about which school you should attend, consider making another round of college visits. Some colleges are now giving in-person tours to incoming students. There are also virtual tours you can take online.
Apply for Housing

  *   Apply for housing at the school you plan to attend, if you’ve already made that decision.
Continue Applying for Scholarships

  *   Check in with your school counselor for local scholarships and check out the ones in our scholarship section.
Study for AP Tests and Stay on top of Classwork

  *   AP Exams are right around the corner! Remember: colleges will request your final transcripts so don't slack off on any of your classes.
