Hi everyone! My name is Ashley Allen, I am your new Upward Bound Oasis High School Advisor. I graduated from UC Riverside with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Law and Society. As a high school student, I was an Upward Bound participant myself. Upward Bound helped prepare me for college and became my family, which I am so thankful for. I also was a part of Upward Bound in High School and it allowed to me have a family away from home and receive the help I needed in order to get to where I wanted. College Spotlight: UC Riverside

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) is a public institution that was founded in 1954. UCR is one of 10 schools in the University of California system and was the official UC Citrus Experiment Station before becoming a university. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 22,055, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 2,131 acres. It utilizes a quarter-based academic calendar. UCR ranked #34 among public universities in the United States according to the 2021 edition “Best Colleges” guide. Its in-state tuition and fees are $15,510; out-of-state tuition and fees are $15,510 as well.
UCR is located in Riverside County, in the city of Riverside, California. The UCR Highlanders participate in NCAA Division I sports, as members of the Big West Conference. The Highlanders have won 5 national championships and 12 individual National Championships. The school has over 450 student organizations, ranging from topics such as community service, health and wellness, and career development. UCR offers 4 first-year residence halls, Aberdeen-Inverness, Dundee, Lothian, and Pentland. In addition to traditional residence halls, there are a variety of other housing options available, including academic-sponsored housing, and on/off-campus apartments for continuing students. The campus is dedicated to environment sustainability and is ranked #2 systemwide for renewable energy!
UCR offers well-regarded graduate programs through the Bourns College of Engineering and Graduate School of Education. Additionally, graduate programs are highly regarded at UC Riverside, with specialty offerings at the university’s School of Medicine and the School of Public Policy. UCR hosts a variety of music festivals every year, including "Block Party", "Winter Solstice”, “Heat Festival", and "Spring Splash". In recent years, famous artists such as Panic at the Disco, SZA, and Cage The Elephant have all performed on stage. Notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Steve Breen, best-selling mystery novel author Elizabeth George and Nobel Prize-winning chemist Richard Schrock.

Career of the Month: Neurosurgeon

     A neurosurgeon is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions related to the brain<https://www.webmd.com/brain/picture-of-the-brain#1>, spine<https://www.webmd.com/back-pain/ss/slideshow-spine-problems>, and other parts of the nervous system<https://www.webmd.com/brain/what-is-nervous-system#1>, including congenital anomalies, trauma, tumors, vascular disorders, infections of the brain or spine, stroke, or degenerative diseases of the spine.

     Neurosurgeons may provide non-surgical treatment to patients, but are specifically trained and become certified in the use of surgical treatments. Today, most neurosurgeons perform more spine than brain surgeries. Some neurosurgeons specialize in specific types of spinal problems, such as cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) disorders, spinal cord injury, or by age group. Pediatric neurosurgeons treat infants and children, while other neurosurgeons specialize in disorders affecting adults.

     Neurosurgeons also perform a wide variety of duties in addition to surgery. For instance, other health specialists such as emergency room doctors and neurologists often consult with neurosurgeons regarding their cases.  Lastly, continuing education through annual meetings, conferences, scientific journals, research is necessary to keep up with advances made in the complex field of neurosurgery.
