Dear Students:

I would like to make you all aware of a new addition to our Upward Bound activities. This year we are introducing a Semester Stipend for your active participation in UB. Similar to the Summer Program, you now have an opportunity to earn a stipend for participating in UB activities and events during the Fall 20 and Spring 21 semesters.

Similar to all UB expectations, there has to be accountability and standards on all levels.
The Fall Semester Stipend can be earned as follows:

  * You will have the opportunity to earn up to $160.
  * The point system will be based on two factors:
1. Academic Advising (50%)
Students must attend all monthly advising sessions to receive the full percentage.

2. Participation in UB Activities (50%)
Students must attend a minimum of 8 UB activities, such as Study Hall, Saturday Sessions, College Application Workshops (Seniors only), and Virtual Field Trips and Workshops, to receive the full percentage.

In order for your participation to count towards your stipend, it is your responsibility to complete the Sign-In Sheet that will be available for each UB service. UB Staff will document each instance and verify that you have met the required number of activities.

You will need to complete two forms in order to receive your stipend. You will receive more information in the coming months.

We are excited to provide a stipend this year, and we hope you take full advantage of the opportunity and actively participate in UB activities and events. If you have specific questions about the point system or the stipend, please contact your Assistant Director.

Sincerely,

Albaro Martin

Jess is a former Highlander and received her degree in Neuroscience with an emphasis in Psychology. She is currently working on completing her master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Jess has a long history of tutoring and working in the academic field including some time spent as a private tutor, serving for UECC Americorps during her undergrad career, and overseeing a math learning center as the Center Director. Jess is fascinated with how children develop, both from a neuro-biological perspective and also in a very practical sense when it comes to discovering new ideas and concepts. It excites Jess to think about how much more there is to learn and how much potential each child has to develop and grow. Whether it is a student who is years behind or one that is performing above their grade level, Jess is always looking to help cultivate the learning process. Jess also happens to be a lover of the arts. In fact, it was art and music that taught Jess how fun learning and math could be. To this day, she plays the ukulele, is a part-time professional hula dancer, and is always up to learn something new (at this moment it’s mountain biking) or be outdoors enjoying nature and/or rock climbing.

California State University, San Bernardino is a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in Inland Southern California. Opened in 1965 and set at the foothills of the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains, the university serves more than 20,000 students each year and graduates about 4,000 students annually.

CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has the most diverse student population of any university in the Inland Empire, and it has the second highest African American and Hispanic enrollments of all public universities in California. Seventy percent of those who graduate are the first in their families to do so.

The university offers more than 70 traditional baccalaureate and master's degree programs, education credential and certificate programs, and a doctoral program. In recent years, CSUSB added its first doctorate (educational leadership), engineering program (computer science and engineering) and M.F.A. programs in creative writing and studio art/design. Every CSUSB academic program that is eligible has earned national accreditation. The university also is home to the California Professor of the Year (Stuart Sumida).

Cal State San Bernardino has seen records in enrollment, diversity of faculty and students, grant and contract funding, overhead funds, fundraising and international programs development. CSUSB ranks as the second-safest among all 33 public universities in California.
Cal State San Bernardino is listed among the best colleges and universities in the western United States, according to The Princeton Review, Forbes and U.S. News and World Report, in their respective annual rankings. It also is part of the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, With Distinction – the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. In addition, it is a "Military Friendly School" according to G.I. Jobs. CSUSB's College of Business and Public Administration was named by European CEO Magazine as one of the four most innovative business schools in the U.S. and among the top 18 in the world. The Sierra Club named CSUSB one of "America's Coolest Schools."

Enviromental Scientist

Environmental scientists conduct research to identify, control, or eliminate sources of pollutants or hazards affecting the environment or public health. Their research generally involves determining data collection methods; collecting and analyzing air, water, and soil samples; analyzing environmental data gathered by others; and analyzing for correlations to human activity. They also need to prepare reports and presentations that explain their findings.
Environmental scientists also develop plans to prevent, control, or fix environmental problems like air pollution. They may also advise government officials that make policy, and businesses that need to follow regulations or improve their practices. Some conduct environmental inspections of businesses. Many assess the potential effects of development projects to prevent creating new problems.
Some environmental scientists and specialists focus on environmental issues, while others focus on issues relating to human health. Either way, they work on critical issues, solving some of the most important problems of our day.

Most entry-level jobs require a bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field such as microbiology, chemistry, physics, geosciences, or engineering. Students enrolled in environmental science programs study the sciences broadly, taking courses in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. They may take more specialized courses in hydrology and waste management as well. Social sciences courses in environmental policy, geography, and public administration are also beneficial for learning about the political and human aspects of the field. Hands-on experience or coursework in computer modeling, data analysis, and geographic information systems is highly desirable.
Master's degrees may sometimes be required for advancement. Environmental scientists aspiring to academic careers will need a doctoral degrees. Those pursuing advanced degrees may do well to major in a specific natural science such as chemistry, biology, physics, or geology, rather than a broader environmental science degree.

The average annual salary for environmental scientists was $71,360 per year or $34.31 per hour in 2019.
