Call for Papers: International Conference on Shan Studies

Chulalongkorn University

The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) Chulalongkorn University and the Euro-Burma Office are organising the first international conference on Shan Studies in Bangkok, Thailand. The conference seeks to bring together scholars of Shan Studies from all over the world to share their knowledge and discoveries as well as to meet and promote their co-operation.  The majority of Shan people live in the Shan State of Myanmar, in the North of Thailand, and in the South of China. There are also Shan communities in the other parts of the world. The Shan have a distinct language, and they have maintained their cultural identity up to the present. The organisers look forward to attracting the attention of and participation from scholars of Shan Studies. The fruits of the conference will contribute greatly to the building up of our awareness and knowledge on various development in political and social history, arts, language, literature, performing arts, religions and beliefs.

 

Date of Conference: 15 - 18   October 2009

 

The organisers invite papers on all aspects of Shan Studies, including, anthropology, architecture, art history, environment, gender, history, literature, linguistics, music, performing arts, popular culture,  religions and traditional medicine. Each contributor will have approximately 30 minutes for presentation. The languages to be used in the conference will be English and Thai.  A selection of the papers presented will be published in an edited volume within a year after the conference. The paper should be submitted by 10 September 2009. The paper should not exceed 10,000 words and it should include appropriate bibliography and citations.

 

An abstract of not more than 300 words (using 1” margins on all sides and 12 pt font size and  submitted as attachments, in MS Word or PDF format) to the organisers by 31 March 2009.
